Elon Musk wants a small pet woolly mammoth. This follows after Colossal Biosciences revived baby dire wolves using genetic technology. Tesla and SpaceX's CEO posted a photo of the wolves and humorously asked that scientists also revive woolly mammoths.
However, maybe he is not joking.
Musk wrote:
"Please make a miniature pet wooly mammoth."
We can’t really say why Elon Musk is interested in a woolly mammoth, but it's definitely an idea he's putting out there. If it were anyone else, we’d probably think it was just a joke, but since it's Elon Musk, he might actually be serious about it.
Soon, users started sharing AI-generated images of Elon Musk with a tiny woolly mammoth. Others made obvious jokes about Jurassic Park, saying that after all those movies, we’ve clearly learned nothing and are doing exactly what those films warned us not to do.
Some even joked that Elon thinks he's a member of House Stark from Game of Thrones, demanding mammoths and wolves!
Elon Musk jokes about getting a pet woolly mammoth, netizens react
One of the users shared a meme picturing Elon Musk walking a small woolly mammoth. It raised questions: if this actually comes to pass, will it only be a billionaire phenomenon, or will we all begin substituting our adorable cats and dogs with mammoths?
And who is to say that they will remain that small?
Another user posted a meme of Elon Musk cradling a mammoth as if it were a small cat or puppy. It looks kind of cute but also kind of creepy at the same time!
Another user posted an AI image of Musk and a small mammoth in a snowy field. All fun and games until the mammoth grows up, eh? We all know how things go when the animals get too big to handle. Guess we'll be holding on to our dogs and cats!
Someone else shared a photo with a herd of woolly mammoths, and, cute as it may seem, people aren't really considering what will happen if they get bigger. Who's going to manage them when they get larger in size?
We're not living in the Ice Age anymore, and these mammoths surely aren't going to be like Manny from Ice Age!
So if you're going to resurrect woolly mammoths, you'd better take them with you to Mars. You can't just develop them on Earth and then head off to Mars! We like the vision!
A few users, naturally, were concerned about the Jurassic Park franchise, lamenting, "Have you learned nothing?" Those films cautioned us repeatedly about the dangers of reviving such beasts, but lo and behold.
All this time, we thought about who was going to bring such creatures back. Guess what? It's us.
A user, @FiveHeadClub, stated:
"They gonna mess around and bring back dinosaurs.. Has no one seen Jurassic park?"
Another user, @Nobunny333, added:
"Jurassic Park in real time 😭"
Until now, this was all memes and jokes, okay? You likely assumed that everyone was just joking around. Guess what, though?
Colossal Biosciences came out with its intention to de-extinct the woolly mammoth by 2028. Colossal's CEO, Ben Lamm, spoke to Time Magazine about the Colossal woolly mammoth project being a big step towards their de-extinction endeavor.
So, there you have it. Somebody somewhere actually wants to resurrect these 13-foot-high, 6-ton beasts. And somebody else just wants to pet them. Mic drop.
