Super Bowl LIX was a smashing hit, drawing a record-breaking 127 million viewers for the finals. While many tuned in for the football, a huge chunk were there for the iconic halftime show, headlined this year by none other than Kendrick Lamar.

Fans have since been buzzing about who should take the stage next year, and one name that keeps popping up is Ed Sheeran. Unfortunately for his fans, it doesn’t look like that’s happening anytime soon.

Recently, during his appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Ed Sheeran shared that he doesn’t think he’d be a good fit for the Super Bowl halftime show, despite many fans wanting him to perform.

He explained that English artists don’t usually generate the same level of hype in the U.S. and that his musical style might not align with the show's high-energy vibe. The news has left fans disappointed, hoping the 34-year-old singer eventually changes his mind.

He said,

“I’ve had this conversation before, I don’t think English artists are— there are some that have the pizazz… but me going up there and being like, ‘Here’s the The A Team, and here’s Perfect.’ […] I can’t picture myself doing it… I would definitely go on and do it with someone, just to do the Super Bowl, but I don’t think my set lends itself to that.. You’ve gotta do what suits you.”

Hilarious Fan Reactions

Many fans were left amused by Ed Sheeran’s response and quickly took to the internet to share their hilarious reactions.

"Noooooo," a user wrote.

Well, there might be no better way to express disappointment than typing “no” with multiple Os. This user clearly had their dreams crushed by Ed’s response.

"Not naming names, but a few past headliners could’ve used that same level of self-awareness," commented another.

Talk about using Ed Sheeran’s honesty as a chance to throw some shade! This user thinks a few past headliners could’ve taken a page out of Ed’s book and sat that one out, considering how poorly received their performances were. Now the real question is: who is he talking about?

Dead silence! (via @szaseiji / X)

As Ed Sheeran points out, there’s a chance the halftime show could start with just him and his guitar in dead silence, not quite matching the usual vibe of the show. Unless, of course,he manages to put the entire stadium in a trance!

"Ed acting like the Super Bowl wants him to fight a bear while singing Perfect. 😂😂," a fan joked.

Perhaps Ed Sheeran’s taking the Super Bowl a bit too seriously. It’s not like the NFL expects him to fight a bear while singing Perfect, as this fan hilariously points out.

"Isn't Ed underestimating the power of subtlety in a flashy environment?" wondered another.

You never know, Ed - your subtle style might just be the perfect contrast to the Super Bowl’s flashy energy. Maybe it’s worth giving it a shot.

Ed Sheeran’s comment about not being too keen on performing at the Super Bowl has definitely left fans a bit disappointed. But there’s still hope because, after all, Ed Sheeran and the Super Bowl might just end up creating what one of his songs is called - a Perfect Duet!
