Discord is set to introduce a new feature called Video Quests in June 2025. This will allow users to engage with video ads while earning rewards. This is a part of a strategy called Quests that was introduced on desktops in 2024.
Video Quests Will be featuring ads of different kinds, such as gaming and movie trailers. This feature was already utilized earlier by Max to promote the Dune: Prophecy series. The feature reportedly resulted in a high engagement turnout for the streaming service.
As anticipated, the internet went wild with this news. People joked that Discord is simply seeking means to make money, referring to it as another move to rob kids who use the app for whatever purpose.
Hilarious memes filled social media, with people making fun of how even Discord has now joined the bandwagon of squeezing money from its users.
Social media reacts to Discord's Video Quests feature
Some users just commented that they knew this was going to happen, remembering the "good old days" of the internet when things were easier and more intuitive.
A user @FlorkOfCows commented in a simple yet sarcastic manner:
"And there it is."
Another user @BaconTheif added:
"I really feel bad for people that never got to experience the internet before it became an shopping/advertisement portal with a few neat features attached."
In the meantime, some people have humorously charted the demise of the app, asserting that this is the typical trajectory for all apps, which ultimately goes belly-up.
A user @makro_art laid out the map for Discord's downfall:
"Insane how EVERY single messaging app takes exactly the same path at exactly the same rate. 1. Good simple app that does messaging and calls. 2. Gain 100% control of the market. 3. Paid animated emojis, animated screen effects, paid profile customization. 4. Ads. 5. Bankruptcy."
Another user @vinnie_bitcoins added:
"Lol discord on the decline already."
There are already some users anticipating the worst, joking that soon users will be required to watch ads before entering a channel—though it's optional at the moment. Others snarkily remarked that they just keep adding features no one asked for.
A user @EmtecCrypto predicted:
"Soon you’ll have to watch an ad before joining a channel 🤦♂️"
One user @DalebotX dissed saying:
"discord is becoming microsoft. bloating their software with so-called features no one wants or asked for."
Others joked that they would take the video quests just to get rewards for things they would never use and that developers are turning users into gamers.
A user @Asapteejo joked:
"Can’t wait to watch 100 ads for a hat my character will never wear.😭😅😅"
A user @BibsTheExplorer went on to claim:
"Discord turning us into mobile gamers fr 😭"
Users inundated social media with funny GIFs and memes, teasing the impending death of the app.
A user shared a reaction pic, stating:
"We’re getting closer and closer fellas"
Another user shared a hilarious GIF that probably said we know what's coming next.
The key thing to know is that unlike mobile ads that you’re forced to watch to continue, "video quests" will appear at the bottom of the screen, and users can choose whether to watch them or not.
These ads will only show up if users agree to take on a quest and participate. With over 200 million users, companies can use this feature to promote their products in a more interactive way.
