David Fincher, chieftain of some absolutely spine-tingling modern thrillers, is adapting Squid Game into an English-speaking reimagining, and people on the internet are flatly not okay with this.

While some fans are here for Fincher's brooding, cerebral touch, others go full meme mode, roasting, theorizing, and generally announcing the funniest side of X (formerly Twitter). An X user humorously stated: "Squid Game in the U.S.? The real twist will be finding health insurance after."

Another user stated: "Ah yes, 'Squid Game: Suburbia Edition.' Contestants must survive HOA meetings, aggressive car leases, and the ultimate test: sharing Wi-Fi with neighbors."
A user mentioned: "We don’t need that thank you though."
A comment read: "It’s called MrBeast … 🙄"
"Can we just come up with some original ideas for once?", read another comment.
A user said: "MrBeast has done the English version… twice now."

A quick refresh on the OG Squid Game

Squid Game first premiered in September 2021. This South Korean survival drama, written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, is the cultural reset of 2015. The show's premise is simple yet sinister: a group of people with no hope of ever keeping up with bills get to engage in games they used to be fond of as kids, with their lives and lots of bucks at the line.

With 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, Squid Game became one to speak loudly on economic inequalities, moral compromise, and exactly how far humans will go for survival.

Season 2 dropped just this week, three years after Seong Gi-hun's harrowing victory. Our guy Gi-hun is back, but he's got some beef to settle with these mysterious game organizers.

For those who might not know, David Fincher is the lord of the dark, gnarly corners of the human psyche and can turn those into binge-worthy masterpieces. This guy has opted to give the movie industry Fight Club, Gone Girl, Se7en, and the equally mindblowing Netflix series known as Mindhunter.

Anyway, here is Hwang Dong-hyuk, the mastermind behind the original Squid Game, who seems raring for this. He told TheWrap:

“I know Netflix has a plan. They are not going to throw this idea away... Maybe I’ll be in one of those projects as an advisor or co-creator. Who knows? But Season 3 is not going to be the end of the ‘Squid Game’ universe.”

What to expect from the Fincher-verse Squid Game?

With Fincher's proclivity for dark themes and complex characters, there could not have been a more fitting match than that made between him and Squid Game. While plot details or casting are still scarce, lots of speculation has mounted as to how Fincher might reimagine the original material in putting it across to an American audience.
