Performance reviews rarely go as you expect them to. You might be on your best conduct all year, yet lose the appraisal game due to a few shortcomings. If it helps, let me assure you that even the cutest dogs fall victim to 'unfair' review practices! Let's meet Fu Zai, a police corgi, who lost his annual bonus.
Fu Zai is the pioneer of corgi representation in the Chinese police force. After passing critical tests with flying colors, the 18-month-old Corgi puppy was appointed as a police dog. It earned the qualification with the extraordinary explosive detection skills and rigorous training.
In October 2024, Fu Zai officially joined the Weifang Public Security patrols. After months of service, the corgi was prepared for the annual performance-based bonus.
What happened during Fu Zai's year-end performance review?
Zhao Qingshuai from the Weifang Public Security Bureau was seen assessing Fu Zai in a viral video posted on Douyin. Zhao said:
“I recognize and appreciate your contribution to boosting the image of our police dog unit in Weifang … and I’m offering you a red flower and some snacks in reward,”
Another officer brought in a box of delicious snacks and toys. Fu Zai's eyes lit up upon the arrival of his 'bonus.' However, the happiness was short-lived as the officer added:
But you wore a fed-up expression to work recently. What’s worse, you urinated in your own bowl. I’m confiscating your snacks as penalty and hoping you will work harder in the future
And immediately, the bonus was taken away by the officer. Fu Zai stared at his loss helplessly, confused. Relatable, right? That's how China's first-ever corgi police dog was deprived of his year-end bonus.
The video created quite a buzz among netizens as they came forward in support of Fu Zai.

Fu Zai's fate feels like a personal loss. What makes it even more heartbreaking is that every 9-5 employee has undergone the 'penalty' at some point. The video capturing his struggle has fetched over 10,000 likes and countless sympathies on TikTok.
