Things have gotten foggy (literally) in the U.S. as a mysterious, so-called chemical fog has rolled into multiple states. Residents in these states have reportedly been sneezing and dealing with cramps.

While the situation is certainly serious, some users are spiraling into conspiracy theories.

Apparently, as soon as you step outside, you're enveloped by a fog that smells like a lingering fireworks explosion. Your nose starts running, your eyes water, and your stomach feels unsettled.

One Florida resident lamented to the Daily Mail:

“Within an hour of exposure, I started sneezing repeatedly, and my eyes were swollen. I felt feverish with stomach cramps”.

The internet is now in complete panic mode, with everything from secret government bioweapon testing to... aliens.

However, local officials are trying to calm the masses asking people to chill because it’s just winter doing its thing. But social media is screaming “BIOWEAPON!”

An X user wrote:

"They're spraying chemicals to try to create the bird flu epidemic. My allergies have gone crazy since Christmas when it first got foggy. It happens every time they are spraying chemical b******t in the sky."

People are also comparing this fog situation to the COVID-19 pandemic, and "Fogvid-24" is trending on social media.

Mysterious fog in the U.S.

The whole debacle blew up on December 29, 2024, when social media started buzzing about the fog. The hottest take was that this is a sequel to "Operation Sea Spray," a real 1950s experiment where the U.S. Navy sprayed bacteria over San Francisco.

If you want to know more about why the government back then thought let's see what happens, here's a video from TikTok University that's going viral.

On a serious note, one X (formerly Twitter) user had this to say:

“Guys, they dumped a bunch of microbes on the country this week, in the form of fog. I know it sounds tin-foil, but my Spidey senses are telling me they are seeding the skies with pathogens that make us sick. Operation Sea-Spray 4.0 (December 24-31, 2024).”

Another user added:

“PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THIS.. THIS IS BAD… drones lure folks outside... Then the fog rolls in!! This is Operation Sea Spray all over again!!!”

A user has declared:

"Between chemical fogs, a bird flu bio weapon, government fleeing struggling Americans, political corruption, Holy demonic doors, and nuclear threat, the aliens can have me."

Yet another user came up with:

"Looks like the experiments on the population are continuing to date. Roll out the Nuremberg trials."

A text overlay on a TikTok video read:

"I'm no conspiracy theorist but I'm pretty sure fog isn't supposed to look like this."

On the other hand, some individuals were not buying it. As one user wrote: "The chemical fog without moisture is a constant in Georgia!", another X user resorted to the comments section stating:

"So you have weather. Congratulations."
Another user added: "The only constant fog is the one in your brain."
A user advised: "It's called weather Dan, weather."
A comment read: "Your video shows high-humidity skies. Next time, talk to someone who passed 1st grade science classes before posting."

Is this just … nature?

Atmospheric experts explain that fog happens when the air hits its dew point, causing tiny water droplets to chill near the ground. These droplets can trap pollutants, which might explain the chemical smell.

Rudolf Husar, an atmospheric scientist stated:

"When fog forms, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and other polluting gases are taken up or 'scavenged' by fog water droplets".

While scientists are constantly trying to keep it boring calling it weather and pollution, netizens surely have some creative theories.
