The Caesars Superdome in New Orleans hosted Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl LIX halftime show, which elicited a range of responses. Although the performance broke Michael Jackson's 1993 record with 133.5 million viewers, it was criticized for its song choices, audio quality, and participation from the audience.

Some online footage from the audience galleries showed a section of the audience not paying attention to Lamar’s performance.

According to Twitch star Kai Cenat, "the crowd was making no noise" during Kendrick Lamar's performance. Cenat claimed that the crowd's cheers were added in post-production.

To add fuel to the fire, Drake liked a video of Kai Cenat saying the NFL added crowd noises to Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl performance.

Of course, not everyone agreed with the “silent stadium” narrative. Some clips showed fans vibing—sorry, enjoying—Lamar’s set, dancing and rapping along. But once social media gets its hands on a conspiracy, good luck stopping it.

Social media's response to Kai Cenat's claims

An X user stated:

"Bro’s just lying for no reason."

Another user added:

"Drake paid him to say this 😂😂"

A user mentioned:

"Bro just saying it cus he wants that Drake collab."

Another user opined:

"they trying so hard to get back in Drake's good graces lol."

A user joked:

"It's called "listening"."

Meanwhile, a user said:

"Kendrick really thought he was him 😂 😂😂😂"

A user went on to say:

"Crazy y’all think everyone in attendance were rap/hip hop fans 😂"

Highlights of Kendrick Lamar’s performance

The show featured surprise cameos by Serena Williams and Samuel L. Jackson. Williams crip walked to Kendric's performance. Crip walk is a Los Angeles dance style, while Samuel L. Jackson, disguised as Uncle Sam, acted as emcee.

Songs like Humble, DNA, and All the Stars were among the hits Lamar performed.

SZA added her voice and dancing to the performance as well.

Song selection controversy

Reactions were varied when Lamar decided to make his diss song, Not Like Us, which is directed at Drake, play an important part. Some fans were disappointed since they thought this song took precedence over his most well-known and acclaimed tunes.

Critics argued that dedicating a significant portion of the performance to this feud-centric song detracted from the overall experience.

In performing Not Like Us, Lamar made a notable change by omitting the word "p*dophile."

Yet, he gazed directly into the camera with a playful smirk as he mentioned Drake’s name, preserving the song's infamous double meaning:

"Try' to a chord it's probably A minor".

The Drake factor

Many fans felt that Lamar turned his Super Bowl LIX Halftime performance into a diss track for Drake rather than performing his iconic songs.

Some fans believed that Lamar would skip the diss track because the NFL might not allow it due to the controversy surrounding Not Like Us. However, Lamar performed the song and wore a silver necklace with a pendant for the letter “a” related to his lyrics, accusing Drake of several things.

Drake's legal team is pursuing action against Lamar's record label, Universal Music Group, alleging that it attempted to fabricate a viral sensation from a song that "false allegations" the artist.

A historic performance

Despite the complaints, Lamar was the first solo rapper who headlined the Super Bowl. He performed an elaborate stage show that included dancers, fireworks, and surprise visitors.

With 133.5 million viewers, the rapper's halftime concert surpassed Michael Jackson's 1993 record of 133.4 million, according to Roc Nation, making it the most-watched Super Bowl performance ever.
