After ankle-twisting eight years of marriage, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are officially separating. It should be noted that the tale of Brangelina’s separation started back in September of 2016 and the story has come to an end.
And you bet your bottom dollar the internet had opinions. Twitter (sorry, X—old habits die hard) lit up the second the news broke. One user summed up the vibes perfectly:
"I know the divorce lawyer is SWIMMING in money."
Another user said: "Can’t believe that this man is seven years more evil than my dad lol."
Meanwhile, this is how a user imagines the lawyer right now:
A user hilariously stated: "If I ever get a death penalty, I know which lawyer to hire.. Thanks Brad & Ang."
Yet another user reacted with a Family Guy GIF:
"And now it’s my turn to make the move", a user mentioned.
Brangelina divorce chronicles
On December 30, 2024, both Jolie and Pitt provided a default to the Los Angeles Superior Court with respect to a stipulation in the case of their marriage dissolution and property division. Oh, memo to every TV series writer ever: this is what the last episode of a series feels like – and we signed up for this show from season one.
AP reports that Judge Scott J. Nord approved the settlement just a day after the celebrities signed off on it.
For those who aren’t caught up, here’s the TL;DR: This mess started when Angelina filed for divorce after an incident on a private jet. Allegations of abuse against Brad emerged, leading to an FBI investigation (spoiler: no charges were filed). Since then, it’s been eight years of legal wrangling, emotional statements, and an internet that just won’t quit.
Angelina: exhausted but relieved
Jolie's lawyer, James Simon, issued a statement that quietly read like a war hero musing over a long, tough battle. He was quoted by AP saying:
"More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt."
He added that she and her kids left all the properties they shared with Brad and have been focusing on healing.
The settlement states that neither party will be paying spousal support in the future.
But before you grab the confetti, there's a catch: some legal issues are still hanging around like that last guest who won't leave the party.
Remember Château Miraval, the couple's dreamy French winery? Yeah, it's a whole thing. Back in 2021, Angelina sold her stake in the $67 million winery to a third party.
Brad was having none of that and sued her for breach of a "family agreement" that supposedly kept the vineyard within the family.
So, officially, the divorce is over. But the drama-fueled wine? Not so much.
The Love Story of Brangelina
Once upon a time, they were Hollywood's 'It' couple. Fans swooned over their red-carpet moments, their adorable brood of six kids, and that iconic Mr. & Mrs. Smith chemistry. However after marriage in a glamorous wedding in the year 2014, their fairy tale seemed to turn south.
However, by the year 2016, the early signs of a crack in the relations were already appearing. Their split became tabloid gold, particularly after claims arose that Pitt was abusive to both their children and her on a private flight with their kids aboard.
A report from the FBI later said there was "probable cause" to file charges against Pitt but Jolie never pursued it as she had taken the step solely for her children.
The custody battle over their six kids (three biological, three adopted) was like a never-ending chess match with paparazzi documenting every move.
For now, though, let's raise a glass of Miraval wine (ironic, much?) to the end of an era.
