NE ZHA 2 has officially taken the crown as the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, surpassing ‘Inside Out 2’ and closing in on the $2 billion mark.
While this is a massive achievement, the internet is reacting in the only way it knows how with confusion, jokes, and a little bit of existential crisis. Apparently, half the people online have never even heard of this movie.
The rise of NE ZHA 2
Despite being a box office juggernaut, NE ZHA 2 has somehow remained a mystery to a large chunk of moviegoers. The sequel to the 2019 Chinese animated hit, NE ZHA, has taken China and other international markets by storm. But in typical fashion, some Western audiences are only just realizing it exists.
With its record-breaking success, the movie is about to become the first animated film to hit the $2 billion milestone. That should be a cause for global celebration. Instead, we have comment sections full of people wondering if the movie is even real.
As news of ‘NE ZHA 2’ dominating the box office spread, social media did what social media does best: turned it into a meme. One viral post highlighted the movie’s success, only for the replies to be filled with people completely baffled by its existence.
Some had no idea what ‘NE ZHA 2’ was. Others questioned if the title was some kind of elaborate joke. A few people were straight-up convinced this was a prank. And then, of course, came the classic realization that maybe, just maybe, America isn’t the center of the universe when it comes to cinema.
The internet, as expected, has delivered some golden reactions.
Some people genuinely could not believe that an animated movie they had never heard of was making more money than Disney and Pixar classics.
“And yet no one knows what that is,” one user commented, summing up the general confusion.
Others poked fun at the title itself.
“What exactly does NE ZHA 2 even mean?” someone asked as if the words might magically rearrange themselves into something recognizable.
Then there were the Americans realizing, in real time, that they might be living in a media bubble.
“Americans in these comments realizing they live in a bubble lol,” wrote one user, watching people struggle to grasp the idea that not every blockbuster comes out of Hollywood.
Of course, some were more focused on the film’s visuals.
“Children will have nightmares from that face,” one person wrote, referring to the movie’s stylized animation. Let’s just say that ‘NE ZHA 2’ doesn’t exactly have the cuddly look of a Pixar film.
And finally, there were the people who had simply given up trying to make sense of it all.
“We just making up movies now?” one user joked, as if the entire existence of ‘NE ZHA 2’ was some kind of elaborate hoax.
At the end of the day, whether people have heard of it or not, NE ZHA is now a record-breaking giant in animation history.
Maybe it’s time to do a little research, or better yet, watch the first NE ZHA and see what all the hype is about.
