AI expert says generating Studio Ghibli images is costing OpenAI big bucks—fans refuse to feel bad about it and share memes instead

AI-generated art inspired by Studio Ghibli flooded the internet last month. The art was created with OpenAI's ChatGPT, and it seems that it's not cheap for OpenAI. Previously, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confessed that this phenomenon is exhausting the resources of the company. Now, Corpora.AI CEO Mel Morris has also made a similar statement.

Speaking with Dexerto, Morris said:

"From a point of view of the economics of it, it looks great! We’ve had millions of people start using this thing here. Bad news is — let’s not talk about how much it’s costing us, because we’re absolutely [spending] a fortune and probably losing lots of money servicing that demand."
"AI vendors cannot at the moment make profit because the models they’ve developed currently are too inefficient for the application that people are using it for. So, you hear Sam Altman coming out with comments like, ‘Well, we’ve launched this plan and even at this price, we won’t be making any money.'"

Anyone who isn't constantly online may think this is a bad thing—like, why are people overloading AI just to create Ghibli-style portraits of themselves? Do we really need to let a company spend millions on something so unnecessary?

But if you've spent even a minute on the internet, you already know people are having far too much fun with this.

Rather than feeling bad, people are joking that this is good news. Some even claim they're going to continue producing images until OpenAI becomes bankrupt. Why? Who knows? It's the internet.

Maybe it's just another day playing pranks on big companies. Either way, everyone is enjoying themselves with all the jokes and memes.

Social media reacts as Ghibli-style images reportedly cost a fortune to OpenAI

Users flooded the internet with memes, mocking how something as mundane as creating animated images is running OpenAI into the ground.

Some are celebrating differently, declaring this is proof that people need to abandon AI and begin learning actual art using pen and paper. Others, however, are taking it as a personal challenge, joking that they'll continue creating images until AI officially declares bankruptcy.

Sharing a celebratory meme, one user went on to say:

"Me when OpenAI fills out for bankruptcy"

Another user dropped a GIF that probably felt like a personal victory to them.

Another individual suggested it's a good thing that AI is not very reliable in generating art long-term.

"Good, that's what yall get... Now get a pencil and learn to draw."

Meanwhile, an unbothered user said that it sounds like a "them problem."

Poking fun at Elon Musk, a user went on to claim that:

"The person behind half of the generation of the images.. 😉"

Some users are coming up with hilariously wicked suggestions, saying that everyone should just keep making the images continuously until the servers physically burn out. Others are even asking how a harmless internet meme could possibly hurt a huge corporation.

If the quote "some men want to watch the world burn" was an X comment, this user @NsanityOfficial would be it:

"Y’know what guys. Yeah. Keep generating your images. I wanna see them servers melt."

A user @CS2_Sam suspiciously mentioned:

"So we can ruin AI company just with stupid trend."

One user, @TheSliceofAnime, hilariously suggested:

"So if we make enough Ghibli art the ai companies will go under? Ya know maybe we should make more then."

Users are in shock, asking if the key to defeating an AI firm is just... using it too much. Some are joking that "modern problems require modern solutions," while others are praising the AI Ghibli trend as the real hero of the story.

A user @AverageScar asked:

"Is the best way to defeat ai to spam it so much that they go broke?"

One user @shadowcrimson12 joked:

"looks like it *modern problems require modern solutions*"

A user @dexyuing4 humorously mentioned:

"Keep doing it then, see what happens, for science of course."

Another user @Cloudyyfrong asked:

"Wait Ghibli ai was the true hero all along?"

But while all this is fun and games, the real consequences might not be as funny. Creating AI pictures consumes a tremendous amount of energy—merely producing 1,000 images would consume approximately 2.9 kWh of electricity, which could charge a smartphone to completion numerous times.
