The world of baseball mourned the death of one of its legendary players, Rickey Henderson known as the “Stolen Base King,” who died at 65 on December 21, 2024. The cause of the death was attributed to pneumonia. Known as the “Man of Steel” because of his best base-stealing prowess, the game owes him a lot. His family, including his wife and their three daughters, have shared a joint heartfelt tribute following his death:
"It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of my husband, Rickey Henderson. A legend on and off the field, Rickey was a devoted son, dad, friend, grandfather, brother, uncle, and a truly humble soul. Rickey lived his life with integrity, and his love for baseball was paramount. Now, Rickey is at peace with the Lord, cherishing the extraordinary moments and achievements he leaves behind."
Rickey Henderson was married to Pamela Palmer. They first met at Oakland Technical High School. The two started dating when they were in different classes, she was in first grade while he was in senior grade. The two exchanged vows in 1983 Together, they have three daughters: Angela, Alexis, and Adrianna.
When Henderson was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 26, 2009, he was joined by his family– mother, wife, and daughters. In his acceptance speech, Henderson shared a heartfelt thanks to the family stating:
“To all my beautiful and intelligent daughters, I wouldn’t be a complete man without your love and support. I love you, girls.”
His daughters were at the time Angela, 24; Alexis, 17; and Adrianna, 15 years old. That would translate to their ages today to approximately 39, 32, and 30 years old respectively.
The family has been keeping a life well away from the spotlight.
Rickey Henderson leaves behind an illustrious career
Rickey Henderson passed away on Friday, December 20, 2024, at the age of 65. The demise was announced by the family through a statement noting that he was an icon both “on and off the field”, a devoted family man, a man of character who had a profound passion for baseball.
Henderson played baseball for 25 years starting from 1979 to 2003 for nine different teams but more so with the Oakland Athletics. He is known as one of the greatest base stealers of all time having stolen 1,406 bases. Furthermore, he has set the record of 2,295 runs.
Henderson finished his career with a personal batting average of 279, totaling 3,055+ hits, tacking on 297 complete home runs, and the most respectable on-base with a 401 average mark.
Many fans and past teammates have since come out to write condolence messages after the deceased player. The Oakland Athletics organization stated that they are heartbroken having to lose one of their best players:
“He was undoubtedly the most legendary player in Oakland history and made an indelible mark on generations of A’s fans over his 14 seasons wearing the Green and Gold. For those who knew him personally, Rickey was much more than a franchise icon and a Baseball Hall of Famer. He was a friend and mentor to every player, coach, and employee who passed through the Oakland Coliseum or played a game on the field that came to bear his name.”
