In a greatly anticipated and highly contested American Football Conference (AFC) Championship game against Buffalo Bills on Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs secured a thrilling victory, clinching their spot in Super Bowl 2025.
Similarly, in early 2021, the Chiefs had their sights set on the title and were looking for a back-to-back slam with a victory over the Tom Brady-led Buccaneers. However, a few days before the big day, Chiefs linebackers coach and Andy's son Britt Reid was in a vehicular mishap that resulted in two young children suffering life-threatening injuries.
As we inch closer to the Super Bowl LIX, we focus on events involving two of Andy Reid's five children.
Andy Reid: Triumphs on the field, trials off it
On the pitch, Andy Reid has had a stellar run - winning three titles and in contention to be one of the NFL's greatest coaches. And with a wide-open window to win more championships, no matter what happens in New Orleans on February 10, the Chiefs will enter next year with the best betting odds in the AFC, and even the NFL.
On the personal front, however, Reid has suffered more than his fair share of hardships, particularly regarding the challenges surrounding his two sons - Britt and Garrett, which have brought both public scrutiny and private heartache.
Losing a son
Reid, who coached the Philadelphia Eagles for 14 seasons and won his first Super Bowl with the Chiefs in 2020, faced tragedy in 2012 when his son Garrett, 29 at the time, died of a heroin overdose. Garrett, an unofficial strength coach for the Eagles, was found during training camp at Lehigh University, shocking many who believed he was overcoming his battle with addiction. Additionally, Garrett had also served a prison sentence in 2007 due to his involvement in a high-speed crash, which was a result of his heroin addiction.
The menace of DUI and gun charges
Before his involvement in a DUI charge in 2012, Britt Reid, 22 at the time, was sentenced to 23 months in prison and five years of probation for a 2007 road rage incident in which he pointed a gun at another driver. The judge, who also sentenced both of Andy Reid's sons (namely Britt and Garrett), reportedly described the family’s home as “a drug emporium” and even referred to them as “a family in crisis.”
The way ahead
With his troubles safely tucked away in the past, Andy Reid can now focus all his attention and determination on the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl aspirations. And after Sunday's decisive win over Bills at the Arrowhead Stadium, the road to his championship looks clearer than ever.
