On January 26, the FanDuel app stopped working for the New Jersey users at what many would consider the worst possible time. The AFC Championship game was slated to commence on Sunday evening while the NFC Championship match was already underway.

As many were in the middle of depositing money to their FanDuel accounts or placing their bets, the application went down. The users flooded the Downdetector with reports, while customer support also addressed the issue regarding the NJ operations. Here’s what the customer support wrote on X:

“We are aware some users in New Jersey are currently having issues with their balance display. Our team is working to resolve this issue as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience!”

However, the users had already begun losing their patience, as they criticized the app. A user displayed their disappointment as they wrote,

“No way Fanduel just went down on championship Sunday ya had one job today and yall continue to fail us @FDSportsbook.”

The unexpected mass outage of the sports fantasy gaming app left many dismayed, who voiced their anger on social media. Some directly replied to customer support, while others made separate posts on X targeting the sports betting app.

“The FanDuel app being down statewide for 2+ hours on the Sunday of Divisional Championships is actually insane,” a user noted.
“fanduel's website being down for the nfc conference championship should be illegal,” another user added.
“How is it actually legal for @FDSportsbook @FanDuel to take your money/wagers and then be down for over 2 hours?!,” someone asked.
“If you have been impacted by the outage at @FanDuel_Support @FDSportsbook please DM me. I am calling my attorney tomorrow to initiate a class action lawsuit. Already have 15 of my friends who currently cannot access the application with large amounts of money compromised,” another one declared.

Many users also replied to the customer support under their official post about the outage in New Jersey. A user complained,

“Your app is terrible and always messes up our money. Why don’t you compensate us.”

Another user enquired,

“Will there be a compensation for NJ users? It's been almost 3 hours. When is this going to be resolved? We should all receive a $25 Bonus Bet.”

Someone wisecracked,

“Unplug it and plug it back in. If it works hit me up for a job in IT I want 6 figures and a sign on bonus.”

Another one displayed their displeasure,

“2 hours. 2 hours on championship Sunday. Completely inexcusable.”
“I’ll be moving to DK,” a user said about switching to DraftKings.

Hours after the outage, the customer support team officially restored the application services. In an updated post, the team notified the restoration of sportsbook and casino services on their respective platforms.

For those unaware, FanDuel, Flutter Entertainment’s subsidiary, is among the US market leaders in online sports betting and gaming. Flutter Entertainment’s 2024 Q2 report shows that its subsidiary’s “Net Gaming Revenue market share in sportsbook was 51%.”

Flutter’s gambling app overtook DraftKings in Q4 2023 to become the US market leader and has remained so for multiple quarters. Although the app’s outage on Championship Sunday did garner some criticism for Flutter, its long-term effects are still unknown.

On the other hand, viewers witnessed two exceptional football games. The Eagles beat the Commanders by a one-sided 55-23 in the NFC Championship match. In the AFC Championship game, the Chiefs won a close match-up against the Bills by 32-29.
