Virginia McCaskey, the longtime Chicago Bears owner, took her last breath on February 6, 2025. McCaskey was a veteran in the football business as she died at the age of 102. She inherited the team after her father George Halas's death in 1983. Halas was also the co-founder of the NFL.

Via X (formerly Twitter), the Chicago Bears announced the passing of Virginia. They wrote,

"The Chicago Bears have announced that Virginia McCaskey has passed away. The second owner in the franchises history and owner of the team since 1983."

While she lived a long life, she also ensured that the business remained in the family. McCaskey had 11 children with her husband, Edward 'Ed' McCaskey, in their over six-decade marriage. Most of her children have been associated with the team.

Virginia and Ed tied the knot in February 1943 and were together till the latter's death in April 2003 at the age of 83. Throughout their marriage, they welcomed eight sons and three daughters: Michael, Tim, Patrick, Edward Jr., George, Richard, Brian, Joseph, Ellen, Mary, and Anne.

Some of their children are still alive, while others passed away several years back. However, they did work for the team and kept the family business running.

Besides her children, Virginia McCaskey is also survived by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a few great-great-grandchildren. According to ESPN, she had 21 grandchildren, 40 great-great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

What happened to Virginia McCaskey's two eldest sons?

Virginia McCaskey's eldest son Michael McCaskey inherited his family's love for football and even played while studying. From 1982 to 1999, he served as the team's president. He was later promoted to being the chairman from 1999 until his retirement in 2011.

On May 16, 2020, Michael passed away after a long battle with cancer.

McCaskey's second eldest son Tim was also in the family business. Tim was the vice president of the team from 1993 until his death on January 30, 2011.

After Michael's retirement, his younger brother George became the fourth chairman of the team in May 2011. George was only 14 years old when he began working for the team as an office assistant. Throughout his life, he has worked for the family business and continues to do so. He has also been a member of the Bear's board of directors since 2004.

According to Distractify, Virginia McCaskey's four sons are involved in the family business. However, it is unclear if her sons Edward Jr. and Joseph are involved in the business as they keep a low profile.
