Tyler Sabapathy, an 18-year-old Toronto, Canada native who was studying at Temple University in Philadelphia, passed away On Tuesday, January 28, after sustaining critical injuries over the weekend. Tyler was a member of Temple’s club gymnastics team.
In a statement mourning the teen’s passing, Temple University said:
“It is with deep sadness that we write to share news of the death of first-year student Tyler Sabapathy. Over the weekend, Tyler sustained critical injuries and ultimately passed away this afternoon.”
The university did not disclose the incident that left the teen with injuries. However, the Inquirer reported that the wounds were sustained after Tyler fell from a street pole on January 26 Sunday night near City Hall during the Philadelphia Eagles victory celebration. The inquirer, citing a person off the record, wrote:
“Sabapathy was the person who fell from the street pole at 15th and Market Streets during the massive fan celebration after the Eagles victory over the Washington Commanders.”
In an X post, Fox News reporter Shiba Russel also stated Tyler Sabapathy passed away after he fell off a light pole while celebrating the Eagles' win.
“The teenager who fell off a light pole and hit his head while celebrating the Eagles win has died. Sources confirm he attended Temple. The university released a statement saying 18-year-old Tyler Sabapathy was a freshman from Toronto and a member of the univ club gymnastics team.”

According to a St Michael's College School in Canada, Tyler Sabapathy a Student-athlete at the university, grew up training and competing for East York Gymnastics Club in Toronto. He moved to Temple University last year after graduating from Grade 12 in June 2024. At the time, while explaining his decision to study in the United States, Tyler said:
“In Canada, there are no universities that offer a competitive gymnastics programme, so over the past few years, I have researched and visited many U.S. universities, eventually landing on Temple. Many factors, including location, academic opportunities, and a strong gymnastics programme, influenced my decision.”
Tyler reportedly won multiple provincial championships and over 120 medals in provincial, regional, and international competitions as a gymnastic athlete. The teen was reportedly pursuing a bachelor of science in exercise and sports science from Temple University.
In a YouTube video, Tyler revealed he had been training since he was 2 years old. He reportedly began competing when he was 6 years old.
The teen's death has rattled the community who mourned his passing by expressing their devastation in social media posts. In a Facebook post, Save Philly Sports Media wrote:
“RIP Tyler Sabapathy, an 18-year-old Eagles fan who fell off a pole from over 40 feet in the air celebrating last Sunday, passed away due to a severe brain injury. He attended Temple University.”
Reacting to the post, a community member wrote:
“That’s someone’s child.. heartbreaking. There’s no words I can give to his family.”
As the community grapples with the loss, authorities are yet to officially reveal the cause of death.
