On Thursday, January 30, 2025, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) member J. Todd Inman addressed the media regarding the DC Crash. Inman informed the media that he would be leading a thorough investigation to ensure that such a situation can be avoided in the future.
As Todd Inmam addressed the media, people were intrigued to know more about him. Todd Inman took an oath with the NTSB in March 2024 and previously worked for APCO Worldwide, the U.S. Department of Transportation, and Florida's Department of Management Services, according to the NTSB. He was nominated for the position by former President Joe Biden, and his term ends in 2027.
Earlier reports from The Courier Journal indicate that Inman hails from Owensboro and was picked by former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to serve as a special liaison; Chao directed local officials in Kentucky for the grant applications leading to the re-election of her husband Mitch McConnell in 2020. Inman was also her chief of staff.
Todd Inman obtained a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and Advertising from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). His academic excellence and contributions earned him recognition in the "Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities."
Todd Inman got emotional at the press conference
Todd Inman confirmed that data had been retrieved from the commercial jetliner’s recorder, capturing the final moments before impact, including a 'verbal reaction' from those on board, followed by a slight nose lift of the aircraft.
Inman also stated that investigators had interviewed three of the five air traffic controllers working at the time of the crash. Authorities are still assessing whether five controllers were a standard staffing level for the airport, especially given reports that the facility was operating below its target staffing levels, reported the Washington Post.
Additionally, Inman noted that investigators were examining key details, such as the helicopter’s exact altitude and whether its crew was using night vision goggles, which could have played a role in the crash. He said:
“We will find out with happened and we will do everything we can to prevent it. We’ll make recommendations and we will attempt to never have to deal with those types of accidents again,”
Todd Inman also got emotional a few times during his media address, especially when speaking about the crash. He said:
“From tragedy we draw knowledge to improve the safety for us all. That’s what we’re doing right now, we’re dealing with tragedy, but we need to improve safety. You want to do something about it? Adopt the recommendation of the NTSB. You’ll save lives. I don’t want to have to meet with those parents like that again.”
Todd Inman's dedication to safety and the welfare of others was evident as he emphasized the importance of implementing the NTSB’s recommendations to save lives.
