The University of Rhode Island is mourning the loss of staff member Maureen McDermott, who was reportedly struck by a car on campus on November 6, 2024. In a mass email sent by the University of Rhode Island administration and cited by NBC affiliate 10 WJAR, the school confirmed Maureen McDermott was the staffer who was struck by a car while walking down Lower College Road near Kingston Campus on November 6.
The letter sent on November 17 revealed McDermott, who was hospitalized after the accident, succumbed to her injuries on Friday, November 15, 2024.
Detailing the incident that claimed the life of the beloved staffer, the publication reported on November 6, 2024, police and campus security were called to Lower College Road over reports of a pedestrian hit by a student car. The pedestrian was later identified as McDermott. At the time of writing this article, the student’s name has not been disclosed. It is unclear if the student was charged in the incident.
Maureen McDermott worked at the University of Rhode Island for over four decades
According to the letter sent by the school, Maureen McDermott, who joined the University of Rhode Island in 1981 as a major events coordinator, was a director of student involvement and the Memorial Union at the time of her passing. McDermot, who had worked at the University for more than four decades, was described as an innately compassionate person and the vital “part of the fabric of our community” who served as a friend and colleague to the school faculty.
The University revealed all of her three sons, Ryan, Kevin, and Michael, graduated from the University of Rhode Island. She is survived by her husband Paul, three sons, and her granddaughter Lucy. The University also paid tribute to the beloved staff member, writing:
“Maureen’s radiant smile, unwavering dedication to URI, and 43 years of service to the students and staff she lovingly called her Rhody Family have left an indelible mark. Her legacy and impact will be cherished forever.”
Ana Barraza, Maureen's colleague, also paid tribute:
"I am so heartbroken to know she is no longer with us. She was so much for so many. I send prayers to her family and friends and hundreds of colleagues who loved her. Thank you for everything, Maureen. I will miss your presence in my life." She said, via Facebook.
It is unclear if the student who struck Maureen McDermott was charged in the incident.
