On Monday, December 9, 2024, 26-year-old Maryland Baltimore native Luigi Mangione was identified and arrested as the person of interest in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Authorities said Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, at a McDonald’s restaurant after an employee notified authorities.
Mangione, who was allegedly found with a ghost gun without a license, purportedly lied about his identity to the police. He was charged with carrying a gun without a license, forgery, falsely identifying himself to authorities, and possessing "instruments of crime”, but was not charged with the murder.
According to the New York Post, Mangione graduated as valedictorian from one of Baltimore’s elite all-boys prep schools, Gilman School. He went on to graduate cum laude, earning a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020.
In his valedictory speech floating online, Mangione said:
“Having great ideas, however, isn’t enough to innovate.” He continued, adding that his classmates need “incredible courage to explore the unknown and try new things.”
Mangione’s last known location is listed as Honolulu, Hawaii, where he worked as a Data Engineer. His LinkedIn profile revealed he worked as a data engineer at a car company based in California.
While the motive for the murder is unclear, Inside Edition reported Mangione’s X profile showed an X-ray picture of four pins in a spinal injury. It is unclear if Mangione was a patient.
