Kirby Smart, head football coach at the University of Georgia, tragically lost his father, Sonny Smart, to complications from a fractured hip surgery on 4 January 2025. As people remember Sonny Smart, who was also a revered football coach, let us learn more about his family. We all know and love Kirby, but do you know his wife, Mary?
Kirby Smart, a native of Bainbridge, Georgia, and Mary Beth Lycett, a former standout on the University of Georgia women's basketball team, met many years after they graduated. Lycett was employed at the time by the UGA Athletic Association's business office. According to Heavy, Mary was instrumental in planning Smart's visit to interview for the running backs coaching position at the University of Georgia in 2005.
The couple are parents to twins Weston and Julia, born February 8, 2008, and a boy, Andrew, born May 25, 2012. Kirby and Mary Beth Smart co-manage the Kirby Smart Family Foundation, which is dedicated to creating a positive effect in the community by providing help to children.
The Smart family's youngest son, Andrew, has had a close association with the Bulldogs, having grown up around the team, as reported by 11Alive. Tight end Darnell Washington shared his close bond with Andrew, saying:
"Andrew is like a little brother to me. I have plenty of nephews, and I’ve got two daughters of my own, so I just treat him like one of my own."
On the The Kirby Smart Family Foundation, Mary Beth Lycett Smart said:
“Kirby and I have been so blessed. The University of Georgia has blessed us so much so we’re just thankful to have this opportunity to give back.”
