The University of Missouri condemned one of its retired professors, Karen Piper, for her “deeply offensive” remarks about the raging California wildfires. Piper took to X on Thursday to claim that actor James Woods losing his home amid the inferno is because of Karma.

Speaking about the vocal conservative, Karen Piper penned in a now-deleted post:

"James Woods' house is burning down. It's karma calling.”

As for who she is, Places Journal states that Karen Piper is the author of The Price of Thirst, "which explores the connection between water privatization and global social unrest."

She earned her master’s degree in environmental studies and later a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Oregon in 1996. Some outlets claim she retired from the University of Missouri, though her LinkedIn states that she still works there, having joined in August 1996.

Here's all we know about why Karen Piper dissed James Woods:

Karen Piper was likely referring to James Woods' comments about his views on the California Wildfires not stemming from climate change, as just yesterday, he told a commenter on X:

“This fire is not from ‘climate change,’ you ignorant a**hole. It’s because liberal idiots like you elect liberal idiots like Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass. One doesn’t understand the first thing about fire management and the other can’t fill the water reservoirs.”

A spokesperson for the University of Missouri issued an email condemning the statements of one of its own:

"The University of Missouri extends its sympathies to all those affected by the wildfires in California,” they wrote. “We find the statement by Karen Piper — a retired professor — to be deeply offensive, and it does not reflect the university's viewpoint or values. We are reviewing this matter.”

As for Woods, while he didn't respond directly to Piper's remarks, he did reflect on what it was like losing his home in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood. In a statement on X, he said:

"All the smoke detectors are going off in our house and transmitting to our iPhones. I couldn’t believe our lovely little home in the hills held on this long. It feels like losing a loved one."

He echoed the sentiments in a follow-up tweet, noting:

"I took this last night from our beautiful little home in the Palisades. Now all the fire alarms are going off at once remotely. It tests your soul, losing everything at once, I must say."

As for the winds responsible for spreading the wildfires, the Independent reports that these are not expected to die down until the end of the week. Kevin McGowan, director of the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management, asserted that "This is not a normal Red Flag."
