Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas has made new history by becoming the world’s oldest person. At the age of 116 years, she received the title by the Guinness World Records. Her name is now listed after Tomiko Itooka from Japan who was honored with the title in September 2024.
Itooka died on December 29, 2024, at the age of 116 at a hospice in Ashiya, Hyōgo Prefecture. With that, Inah is now the oldest living person after Itooka’s death. She is also the second oldest nun on record, following Lucile Randon or Sister André, who lived till 118.
Inah Canabarro Lucas was born on June 8, 1908 in Sao Francisco de Assis. Her parents were Mariana Canabarro Lucas and Joao Antonio Lucas. Her journey in the quest for religion began at the age of 16. She was the sixth of seven siblings.
In 1980, she held a position at the Provincial House in Porto Alegre. On her 110th birthday in 2018, Pope Francis blessed her with an apostolic. Interestingly, Inah Canabarro Lucas is reported to be the last known person born in 1908 who is still alive.
According to the official website of Guinness World Records, Inah was thin during her childhood due to which everyone thought she would not live for long. She received her education from Santa Teresa de Jesus boarding school. Inah became a nun after taking her vows on July 27, 1934, in Montevideo, Uruguay.
It is reported that she returned to Brazil and taught Portuguese and mathematics in a school. She had an illustrious teaching career as she taught at various places during her life.
According to Inah Canabarro Lucas, God is the secret to life
Inah Canabarro Lucas shared with LongeviQuest in March 2024, that she credits her longevity to her God, considering him the foundation of life and everything else. She also expressed her love for football, noting her support for Sport Club Internacional because it unites people from all walks of life, regardless of wealth.
When asked about her family, the nun said her family was huge, comprising her father, mother, brothers, and sisters. She also revealed that she had a music band with which she traveled to various places.
Lucas did not see herself as an old person and thought she was young and beautiful just like the others. Besides being devoted to religious duties, she also found solace in painting. During the interview with LongeviQuest, she showed some floral designs she made on cards.
Inah Canabarro Lucas’s secret to life is her praying that she did with her rosary. Her friends and people where she currently lives said another secret of the nun’s long life is her focus on others, not herself. Coordinator Sister Lucia Ignez said she never demanded anything and was always grateful for everything she received. The sister said:
“She prays for everyone. She cares for everyone.”
According to a report by EWTN, Inah Canabarro Lucas lived through two World Wars and saw the ten pontiffs. She is also among the few nuns in her congregation to still wear her habit.
