Henry McGowan, a 30-year-old Brooklyn resident, was arrested for the murder of his father, John McGowan, according to Irish officials.

Henry reportedly murdered John McGowan on Tuesday night at Ballyfin Demesne, a hotel in County Laois, about 60 miles southwest of Dublin. Shortly before 8 p.m. local time on Tuesday, the hotel called police officers when they found a body, a result of a “fatal assault,” the police said in a statement. The body was later identified as John McGowan, the 66-year-old financier father of Henry McGowan.

"Henry McGowan, 30, of Brooklyn, appeared in Portlaoise District Court Thursday morning to face charges in connection with the death of his father, John McGowan," the BBC reported.

The McGowan family said in a statement they were "deeply saddened by the death of John McGowan. He did everything within his power to bring his son Henry, who suffers from a severe mental illness, the help he so desperately needs. The family requests privacy at this difficult time and will not be commenting further."

On Monday night, John boarded a plane to Ireland after his son, Henry, had got into trouble. John, knowing Henry's mental health condition, rushed to get him help. John reportedly died when his son Henry allegedly assaulted him in the pool area of the luxury hotel. Henry has been charged with the murder and is currently detained in Cloverhill Prison.

Brooklyn resident Henry McGowan worked for a technology software company. Henry ran the New York City Marathon last year and raised over $10,000 for the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

"I had a manic episode in January 2022 and was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder Type I," he wrote. "Many people who suffer from mental illnesses," he added, "are not blessed with the level of support or access to care that I am fortunate to have."

Henry McGowan felt blessed and continued -

"There is no greater lesson from this experience than the importance of community," he wrote. "My family, friends, therapists/psychiatrists, and employer were a formidable force that put a large landing pad (spanning from NYC to Paris) underneath me, one that very well could have saved my life."

According to the BBC report, Henry appeared in Portlaoise District Court on Thursday and faced charges in connection with the death of his father. No further information has been available yet.

Henry’s defense lawyer, Barry Fitzgerald, stated that Henry had significant mental health issues and requested that he receive a psychiatric assessment in prison, as per BBC reports.
