Who was David Weiss? Jeffco Chief of Schools found dead amid investigation

The death of former Jefferson County Schools Chief of Staff, David Weiss, aged 47, has now been fated to an investigation, which is currently being conducted under the Washington County Sheriff’s Office based in Maryland. As per the Sherriff’s Office, at the time of his death, Weiss had been with his family in Maryland during the New Year celebration.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office received the information of Weiss' death on January 1. According to Denver7 News, Lt. David Haugh from the Washington County Sheriff's Office stated that the authorities received a report on the death early Wednesday morning. According to the investigators, Weiss had committed suicide. According to officials, there has been no evidence of foul play so far.

After a school board meeting, Weiss unexpectedly lost his job with the Jefferson County School District on December 19. A spokesperson confirmed that the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was investigating him in connection with the possession of child p*rn*graphy materials, reported The Colorado Sun.

Who was David Weiss?

David Weiss was an accomplished education professional with extensive experience in leadership roles within K-12 education. He most recently served as the Chief of Schools for Jeffco Public Schools in Colorado from February 2022 until his passing in January 2025. His career spanned over two decades, during which he worked in various roles, including Principal, Assistant Principal, and Affiliate Instructor in higher education.

David began his career in education as a teacher in Denver Public Schools from August 2001 to July 2007, where he taught middle school science. He quickly advanced to leadership positions, including serving as Principal at Westgate Elementary School in Jeffco Public Schools from May 2014 to May 2019.

Outside his duties at Jeffco Public Schools, David was also active in molding the country's future leaders by teaching at the Regis University School Leadership graduate program as an Affiliate Instructor between February 2020 and January 2023. As an Assistant Principal at ThunderRidge High School in Douglas County School District between August 2010 and July 2014, he participated in curriculum building and several significant extracurricular activities.

David graduated with an executive MBA from the University of Phoenix between 2002 and 2004 and took higher studies in educational leadership at the University of Denver.
