Cecile Richards, one of the leading figures in America to champion women's reproductive rights passed away at the age of 67 from glioblastoma, an aggressive and quickly-progressing form of brain cancer. Cecile, who was the former President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, often credited her mother, Ann Richards for shaping her activism and resilience.

Ann Richards, known for her quick wit and sharp political acumen, was the 45th Governor of Texas, serving from 1991 to 1995. Ann began her political career in 1976, winning a seat as a Travis County commissioner. In 1982, she was elected state treasurer, becoming the first woman in fifty years to hold a statewide office in Texas. She earned recognition for significantly modernizing the treasury’s operations.

One of the most iconic moments for Richards was when after being reelected in 1986, she delivered the keynote address at the 1988 Democratic National Convention. Mocking President George H.W. Bush, she had said:

“Poor George, he can’t help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth"

Ann became a media sensation after her bold statement of hers. Richards also wrote her autobiography called— 'Let the People In: The Life and Times of Ann Richards.' Ann married her high-school sweetheart David Richards in 1953 and they had four children— Cecile, Daniel, Clarke, and Ellen together. They divorced in 1984.

The influence Ann Richards had on her daughter Cecile

Ann had a significant influence on her daughter, Cecile, particularly in shaping her values and approach to leadership. Cecile often admired her mother’s resilience, political savvy, and commitment to social justice. Ann's example as a strong, independent woman in a male-dominated field inspired Cecile to pursue a path of activism and leadership of her own.

In a 2015 hearing before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, a male member questioned whether she thought the committee would treat her more leniently due to her gender. She swiftly replied:

"Not at all. That's not how my mother raised me."

As reported by NPR News, In a January 2024 Instagram post, several months after her cancer diagnosis, Richards shared her experience navigating a whirlwind of medical treatments, spending precious time with family, and honing in on what truly matters, including her ongoing activism. Quoting her mother, Cecile Richards said:

"After all, what’s the point of life if it’s just about you?"

When Cecile was recently presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, she once again quoted her mother Ann in an Instagram post. She wrote:

"After all, as my mother, Ann Richards, used to say: “Why should your life be only about you?” 🇺🇸🎖️💪"

Ann Richards passed away at the age of 73 on September 13, 2006, after a brief battle with oesophageal cancer. Her death came just six months following her diagnosis. Like her daughter Cecile Richards, who has also faced the challenges of cancer, Ann's passing left a profound impact. Both women, resilient and dedicated to their causes, embodied strength and determination throughout their lives.
