Cecile Richards, an influential figure in the women’s rights movement and former head of Planned Parenthood, died of brain cancer at the age of 67. Her family announced her death and said she was surrounded by family members and by her faithful dog, Ollie.
In addition to her advocacy and leadership, Cecile Richards left a remarkable legacy behind in her family as well and her three children Lily, Daniel, and Hannah have all followed in her footsteps in one way or another.
Richards’ children were raised in a home where activism and social justice were not just beliefs but a way of life (Distractify). Richards and her husband, Kirk Adams, whom she met in 1982 in New Orleans, have raised their children with a profound appreciation for equality, justice, and the strength of women.
Their eldest child, Lily Adams, has forged a prominent career in politics. Her path was supposedly shaped by her family’s commitment to advocacy.
Lily has been involved in many notable efforts, including Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid in 2016. After Clinton lost, Lily moved on to work for Kamala Harris, first in the U.S. Senate and later on Harris’ vice-presidential campaign.
According to Distractify, Richards’ younger children, twins Daniel and Hannah, also seem heavily influenced by their mothers' thoughts and ideals.
Hannah went on to work for Change Corps, a nonprofit outfit training activists. She started her activism early and then worked on campaigns for groups including Green Corps and Sierra Club, where she focused on environmental and social justice issues.
Daniel, the youngest, found activism in his own expression, particularly as a student at Allegheny College. He fought to increase reproductive health services on campus, successfully campaigning for birth control access for students.
His brazen efforts even included things like “slut walks” and educational programs that affected so many people’s sexual health and gender equity.
