A to-be-engaged pilot, parents, ice figure champions, and crew members were among the many lives lost in the crash of American Airlines Flight 5342 near Washington, D.C.
Among the victims were Asra Hussain, a Pakistani woman and an Indiana University alum. In her final moments, Asra Hussain reportedly sent a heartbreaking text to her husband, unaware it would be their last exchange. Asra Hussain was a 26-year-old Indiana University alumna returning from a work trip to Kansas and was set to reunite with her husband, Hamaad Raza.
Asra Hussain grew up in Carmel, Indiana, and earned a bachelor's degree in Healthcare Management and Policy from Indiana University Bloomington in 2020. She went on to earn her master's degree in public health from Columbia University. She was passionate about improving public health and had recently secured a position with a consulting group in Washington, D.C.

Asra Hussain and her husband Hamaad Raza met through the Muslim Student Association when she was a sophomore and he was a freshman. They got married two and a half years ago. Raza's father, Dr. Hashim Raza, a respected physician at Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis, shared the devastating news on social media, saying:
"This is my 25-year-old son who lost his beautiful wife. We are going to D.C. to be with him. Hug your family. We are devastated. Our faith in God is unshakable."
Hamaad Raza like his late wife, Asra, is also an Indiana University alum. The Daily Mail has reported that he works as an accountant at Ernst & Young.
Imam Ahmed Alamine also shared news about Asra Hussain's untimely demise on his Facebook page. He wrote:
"Last night, as I was embarking on my Qatar-bound flight, I received the heartbreaking news that Asra Hussain, the wife of Hamaad Raza and the daughter of Saba and Altaf Hussain was on American Airlines flight 5342."
He also gave insight into Asra Hussain and Hammad Raza's relationship. He wrote:
"When she and Hamaad decided to marry, she asked me to provide their premarital counseling and officiate their wedding—an honor I will cherish forever... Hussain and Raza family, you have lost Asra, but you have gained an entire community. Her legacy of love and kindness will never fade."
There were 64 people on the American Airlines Flight 5342 including Asra Hussain, when the collision happened, per CBS News.
