Tesla cars have become the subject of safety concerns as the company made another recall over an issue with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System, making it the 15th recall the company has made this year.
According to reports, the 2017-2025 Model 3, the 2020-2025 Model Y, and the 2024 Cybertruck models are affected.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filing, Tesla recalled 694,304 cars in the United States on Friday.
As per the reports, while doing a compliance test for the non-US market earlier in November, Tesla first identified the issue with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System. This issue may lead to the warning light's failure to stay illuminated, making the drivers unaware of the low tire pressure, which may lead to dangerous accidents.
"[The issue] may not adequately warn the driver of potential under-inflation of the tires, increasing the risk of a collision," according to the report.
Which models of Tesla are recalled?
During this 15th recall of 2024, Tesla has identified the software issue in specific models, including the 2017-2025 Model 3, the 2020-2025 Model Y, and the 2024 Cybertruck. This marks the 7th recall of the Tesla Cybertruck model since its launch. Previously, in April 2024, Tesla recalled almost 4,000 Cybertrucks to resolve an issue with the accelerator pedal.
According to the company, all Tesla stores and service centers have already been notified about the recall by December 19, 2024. Tesla owners are expected to receive letters for the recall of their vehicles by February 15, 2025. The company plans to resolve the issue with an over-the-air software update, which they believe to be sufficient to solve the problem. Tesla also assured its customers that the recent Tire Pressure Monitoring System issue does not put the owners in immediate danger; however, it was advised to get the free over-the-air software update to ensure complete safety.
On December 13, 2024, Tesla reported around 76 warranty claims and one field report; however, no claims of accidents or injuries have been reported so far due to this software defect. Owners were advised to contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 or Tesla's number SB-24-00-018 for the recall.
This recall marks another challenge to Tesla's claims of ensuring safety in full self-driving amidst the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's investigation of its autopilot safety. Although Tesla cars incorporate multiple advanced safety features, as per reports, Tesla's fatal crash rate is considered to be 5.6 per billion miles driven, while the national average crash rate is 2.8 per billion miles driven. It was also reported that the Tesla Model Y SUV has a fatal accident rate higher than double the average for regular SUVs.
