Around 500 Joann Fabrics and Crafts stores are planned to be shut across 49 states. The company confirmed the decision in a court filing on Wednesday, February 12. It was Joann’s latest filing at the District of Delaware’s United States Bankruptcy Court.
According to the filing, the “underperforming” Joann Fabric stores have been proposed to be closed as part of the eight-decade-old firm’s latest cost-cutting measures. The decision is still pending until the court approves it. A hearing will be held on Friday, February 14, 2025.
Based on the court’s approval, “going-out-of-business sales” will commence on February 15 at the stores planned to be closed. According to a Customer FAQ document shared by Joann, these sales can last several months across more than 500 stores.
The firm's closure plans were released barely a month after it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time. In January 2025, Joann Fabrics declared its plans to keep its stores operational after voluntarily initiating the Chapter 11 process to maximize its value.
California, Florida, and Michigan top the list with the most number of Joann Fabric stores getting closed

The court document shared by Joann lists 533 stores across 49 states. California has topped the list, with 61 stores planned to be shuttered. It is followed by Florida, where Joann has proposed closing its 36 stores. If plans are approved, 33 Joann Fabric stores in each of Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania will no longer be operational.
Many stores in Illinois, New York, Washington, Indiana, Massachusetts, Texas, and Wisconsin have also been classified as “underperforming” and will be shut down after approval. On the flip side, a few stores across South Dakota, Rhode Island, Wyoming, West Virginia, Vermont, Montana, Delaware, Alaska, and many more will no longer be operational, as planned.
Joann Fabrics’ lawyers said in their recent filing, highlighting the need to close the “underperforming” store,
“As the sale process progressed, and prospective bidders continued to conduct diligence and refine their potential bids, the Debtors and their advisors were able to identify a subset of underperforming stores that are unlikely to be considered or included in any going concern bid.”
For the uninitiated, Joann Inc. first filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2024. After filing for bankruptcy protection, the company became a privately held firm after getting delisted from Nasdaq. At that time, it could keep all of its (more than 800) stores operational across the US.
As mentioned, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on January 15, 2025. Initially, the fabric and craft firm didn’t reveal its plans to suspend the operations of any of its stores. The company also ceased selling gift cards while accepting the earlier ones at its stores, but their future is subject to the court’s forthcoming decision.
The firm has posted the complete list of Joann Fabrics stores expected to close at joannrestructuring.com. Customers can visit the website to learn about the fate of the store in their city.
