Where was Sarah Roque found? Person of Interest in custody after Fort Leonard Wood soldier found dead from suspected homicide

Sarah Roque, a 24-year-old U.S. Army sergeant who was reported missing was found deceased in a dumpster on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

The U.S. Army Fort Leonard Wood released a statement on their Facebook account saying that a person of interest had been taken into custody regarding Sarah's death.

The post read:

"A person of interest has been taken into custody in relation to the death of Sergeant Sarah Roque. The incident continues to be under investigation by the Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division. Updates will be provided as they are available."

While the person of interest has been taken into custody, no details regarding this individual have been divulged yet as the nature of the investigation is ongoing.


Where was Sarah Roque's body found?

Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck stated that Roque was reported missing on Monday morning when she failed to show up for her unit's morning formation. Later that evening, Military Police Investigations issued a 'Be on the Lookout' (BOLO) advisory.

Following a search conducted by the Army and local law enforcement, her body was found in a dumpster near the single soldiers' quarters at Fort Leonard Wood.

During a press conference, Beck and Army Criminal Investigation Division Agent John McCabe noted that they could not disclose further information regarding the circumstances surrounding the discovery of her body, as the investigation remains active.

McCabe emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of individuals at Fort Leonard Wood and in the surrounding areas. When questioned about the person of interest, he stated that he was unable to provide more details due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Who was Sarah Roque?

According to Army sources, Roque served with the Fifth Engineer Battalion's K9 detachment as a mine dog trainer and bridge crew member. She had won numerous honors since joining in 2020, including the Army Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

In his statement, Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck, MSCoE and Fort Leonard Wood commanding general went on to describe Sarah Roque as:

"A daughter, sister, friend and Soldier who chose to serve our country bravely and honorably. Her passing has caused a tremendous void throughout our team, and while there are no words to ease the pain, we continue to provide care, resources and support to those who are affected during this difficult time.”
