The 83-year-old man went missing from his South Carolina home on December 22, 2024. According to his daughter, she last heard from him on Sunday around 9 p.m. and filed a missing persons report with the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office on Monday around 11 a.m. She also informed the officers that her father suffers from a heart condition.
The Fairfield County Lieutenant McLemore reported that upon searching the man's house, he discovered the front door of his house was wide open and found a hat and a piece of clothing near the yard and at the edge of the woods.
"When deputies arrived at the residence, they began a preliminary search of the area. Shift Lieutenant McLemore found several concerning signs: the front door was open, the man’s hat was in the yard, and a piece of clothing was discovered at the edge of the woods. A perimeter was quickly set up, and investigators, along with the Sheriff’s K-9 units, were called to assist in the search," the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Investigators readily began the search operation with the help of drones to get a detailed view of the area. They also tracked the man's phone with the assistance of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, and after searching extensively for more than an hour, the K-9 unit ultimately found the man at the bottom of a 20-foot-deep ravine in a weak condition.
According to the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office, the K-9 unit successfully recovered the man from the ravine and transported him to a nearby hospital for medical assistance and treatment. There are no further details of the man's current condition.
"Despite the cold temperatures and the man’s heart condition, he is expected to make a full recovery," as per the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office.
