Jim Acosta exited CNN on 28th January with an on-air sign-off. Jim Acosta worked at CNN for nearly two decades. He gained significant recognition during his tenure, especially for his role as the network's chief White House correspondent.

Acosta’s departure from CNN follows the network’s reorganization of his show’s time slots, which coincided with CNN’s efforts to moderate its coverage under new leadership. Jim stated that after careful consideration and weighing an alternative late-night time slot offered by CNN, he had decided to move on.

Jim Acosta, after signing off from CNN for the last time, revealed that he is moving in an independent direction by launching a new show on Substack.

"Hey guys it's Jim. And let me just say I've had quite the day but as you could see earlier today, this was my last day at CNN and I did want to jump on substack live here for a moment and say welcome to my new venture. I'm going independent at least for now."

Trump responds to Jim Acosta's departure from CNN

Jim Acosta, 53, had been with CNN since 2007 and was known for his often confrontational coverage of President Donald Trump. Reflecting on his career, Acosta shared that his most defining moment was not covering Trump but reporting on former President Barack Obama’s historic 2016 visit to Cuba, as reported by USA Today.

He recalled pressing Cuban leader Raul Castro on political prisoners, a moment that resonated deeply with him as the son of a Cuban refugee. Jim Acosta emphasized that the role of the press is to hold those in power accountable, never to bow to tyranny.

Donald Trump took to his Truth Social account to comment on Jim Acosta's exit. He wrote:

"Wow, really good news! Jim Acosta, one of the worst and most dishonest reporters in journalistic history, a major sleazebag, has been relegated by CNN Fake News to the Midnight hour, “Death Valley,” because of extraordinarily BAD RATINGS (and no talent!)."

Continuing the post using harsh words from Acosta, Trump noted:

"Word is that he wants to QUIT, and that would be even better. Jim is a major loser who will fail no matter where he ends up. Good luck Jim!"

Reposting a screenshot of Trump's post, Jim Acosta wrote on his X:

"Looks like somebody has ADS: Acosta Derangement Syndrome."

In a statement, CNN officials spoke about Jim Acosta's departure. They said:

"Jim has had a long, distinguished nearly 20-year career at CNN, with a track record of standing up to authority, for the First Amendment and for our journalistic freedoms. We want to thank him for the dedication and commitment he's brought to his reporting and wish him the very best in the future."

Jim Acosta joins a growing trend of journalists and media personalities leaving traditional networks to create content on Substack. This shift mirrors the move of other high-profile figures, like Mehdi Hasan, who left MSNBC after his show was canceled and has since built an independent network called Zeteo.
