Fort Bragg is a city located along the North Coast of California in Mendocino County. As per AP News, a Colorado Springs resident who was suspected of detonating a Tesla Cybertruck in front of a Las Vegas hotel and the man accused of driving the pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans both served at the same military base, Fort Liberty which was earlier called Fort Bragg.

The base was originally named in 1918 after Gen. Braxton Bragg, who was a Confederate general from Warrenton, North Carolina. Bragg was known for owning slaves.

New Orleans incident suspect Shamsud-Din Jabbar and Las Vegas incident suspect Matthew Livelsberger were both reportedly army veterans who both once served at Fort Bragg, later named to Fort Liberty in 2023 in a ceremony to make the base more welcoming to current and prospective Black service members in 2023.

The name change was part of a broad Department of Defense initiative after the 2020 George Floyd protests.

Jabbar served in the U.S. Army on active duty from 2007 to 2015 and in the army reserves from 2015 to 2020. The suspect was also deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. Livelsberges has also served in the army since 2006 and has been deployed twice in Afghanistan.

As per the New York Post, suspect Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar rammed a white pickup truck through a crowd of revelers around 3:00 am on Bourbon Street in New Orleans before opening fire and killing at least 15 people. Police officials noted that Jabbar died in a shootout with the police before they found an Islamic State Flag in the truck.

Jabbar's Facebook account included several videos that were apparently addressed to his family and recorded while he was driving the truck. In the videos, he "pledged allegiance to ISIS." In an interview in Beaumont, Texas, Jabbar's brother, Abdur Jabbar, revealed that while they were both brought up Christian, Shamsud-Din converted to Islam and had been "A Muslim for most of his life."

Jabbar was an Army veteran who once served in Fort Bragg.

In another shocking incident, Matthew Livelsberger was identified as the man who drove a rented Tesla to the Trump International Hotel in Vegas before he shot himself dead as he detonated explosives and injured seven people on New Year's Day. Matthew had served in the army since 2006, was deployed twice to Afghanistan, and served in Ukraine, Tajikistan, Georgia, and Congo.
