Michael Dean Davis Jr., 27, was arrested on November 12, 2024, in Laredo City, Texas, concerning findings of human remains. The investigation started after the authorities discovered the remains on October 22, 2024, at a house in Buffalo, Texas. They were reportedly identified as belonging to Mahogany Washington, a 27-year-old woman who had gone missing on June 19, 2022, along with her child, according to the Leon County Sheriff’s Office release on Facebook.
There was an amplified search for Washington and her child after relatives came forward to report them as missing. The last time they were seen was in July 2022.
“Both were entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) as missing persons and a thorough investigation began”, the press release read.
Michael Dean Davis Jr. case background
The Leon County Sheriff’s Office is said to have started an inquiry that culminated in identifying the remains in October. Washington was reportedly Davis’ 8-year-old son’s mother.
This led to an intensive investigation that involved several law enforcement agencies, including the Laredo police department and U.S Marshals, for the search of Davis as well as the safe custody of his son, who was also reported to be missing.
“The remains were sent to The Center for Human Identification (CHI) at The University of North Texas to be forensically examined and positively identified”, the press release read.
Arrest and charges
The sheriff’s office was quoted by the PEOPLE stating, “On Nov. 12, Michael Dean Davis Jr. was successfully apprehended in Laredo for the charge of Murder and was transported to the Webb County Jail”.
He is currently in the Webb County Jail awaiting trial on a bond of $3,000,000.
Investigators got a lead that Davis was living with his missing son somewhere within a house near Cuatro Vientos in south Laredo. The boy was reportedly unharmed when Davis was arrested. However, he was handed over to Child Protective Services, according to the Laredo Morning Times.
The police force expressed apprehensiveness towards Davis, more particularly so because he was alleged to be armed and was known to be a violent person.
“Once inside the home, officers discovered (three) AR-style rifles, a dual drum high capacity magazine, ammunition, several magazines, tactical armor suit (ballistic helmets and bullet resistant vests), and gas masks”, Laredo Morning Times added.
Davis has been accused of murder and child endangerment because of the hazardous surroundings in which the son was found.
"Multiple agencies worked together in order to coordinate the arrest of Davis and the safe recovery of a missing and endangered child," the Laredo police said in their statement.
