Every year, the Piedmont community holds a Thanksgiving Turkey Trot, but this tradition has a different meaning and purpose as the community mourns the death of three high school students, who died in a Tesla Cybertruck crash on November 27.
Mayor Cavanaugh began the event by giving a speech in memory of the victims of the Cybertruck crash on Hampton Road in Piedmont.
I'd ask you to share a moment of silence for the families that are still healing. The families who are grieving who have lost their loved ones. There are no words that will bring these kids back to us, that will make this all OK (...)For families that have lost those who are so precious to them, there are no words to capture the depths of sorrow.
This year's Piedmont Turkey Trot runners passed by the crash site, and some even left flowers for the victims, NBC Bay Area reports.
The crash happened in the early morning of November 27 near Hampton Road; the police officer who responded to an iPhone alert of a crash reached the scene and saw a Cybertruck all in flames. There were four passengers in the vehicle; three of them died, but one of them was pulled out of the truck by someone who happened to know the students.
What is Turkey Trot?
This is how the Merriam-Webster dictionary describes the Turkey Trot:
a ragtime dance danced with the feet well apart and with a characteristic rise on the ball of the foot followed by a drop upon the heel
But this definition refers to a dance; what we are dealing with is an old tradition that is followed in many cities around the U.S. on the morning of Thanksgiving. It is widely considered a fun and silly tradition where people wear silly costumes, mostly turkey costumes, and run. They are often held as a charity event, with donations received in the event going to various charitable organizations or other noble causes.
This tradition first began in 1896 in Buffalo, New York. Initially, it was a 5K run that only had male runners. Soon, runners started dressing in costumes, especially in costumes, and from the 1980s women started participating in these runs too. The distance of the run varies; it can be anything from a short run to a long marathon.
Many people participate in this reportedly fun tradition, not just because of the costumes, but also because of the sense of community it brings, and to prepare themselves by reducing calories for the Thanksgiving feast.
The Buffalo Turkey Trot is one of the oldest and longest-running turkey trot events. It is held in Buffalo, New York, and usually has more than 14,000 runners.
