On 20 November, Wednesday, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) informed the public via an X post that Marvin Redondo Funes was booked into Nassau County Jail for causing a fatal car crash. The crash happened as Redondo allegedly slowed down to take a picture of the 'Welcome to Florida' sign at the border.
The crash, which took place last year on I-95, resulted in the death of his three nephews and one niece. The information about the juveniles is not released to the public, but according to First Coast News, there were two 14-year-old boys, a 12-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl.
According to FHP's X post, Funes is facing multiple charges including multiple counts of "culpable negligence involving the death of four juveniles and numerous other criminal and civil charges". The New York Post reported that Funes is also facing charges for "driving with a license suspended or revoked causing great bodily injury".
Details of the crash that happened on a Florida interstate.
According to the WLTV report, the group was driving from New York to Florida and intended to spend the Fourth of July holiday with their family in Miami. On the early morning of July 1, 2023, Redondo-Funes crossed the Georgia-Florida line along with his girlfriend, his niece, and three of his nephews.
At the I-95, Funes reportedly suddenly slowed down his car by about 1 or two miles per hour to take a clear picture of a 'Welcome to Florida' sign on the side of the highway.
According to reports, the car that was coming from behind did not have enough time to notice or react when Funes slowed down and rammed into the back of the group's car at full speed. The impact of the crash thus affected the four kids the most, who were sitting in the back of the seat.
Three of the four kids died on the scene of the crash while the other was rushed to a hospital but unfortunately died two days later. According to reports, Redondo-Funes, his girlfriend, and the driver of the other car survived the crash without any serious injuries.
First Coast News reported that an arrest warrant against Funes states that his license was revoked by a court order, moreover, four children were sitting in a back seat that was designed for just three people, and out of the four only one was wearing a seatbelt. However, it is not confirmed if the child who was transported to the hospital was the one wearing the seatbelt.
The X post by FHP Jacksonville also thanked the troopers for putting a 'criminal' away,
"Funes was charged with 4 counts of Culpable Negligence involving the death of 4 juveniles and numerous other criminal and civil charges. Thank you to the FHP Traffic Homicide Unit and other agencies for getting this dangerous criminal off the streets. Way to go!"
Funes was extradited from New York to Florida and is held at Nassau County jail for a bond of $270,016 bond and his first court appearance is scheduled on December 6.
