A shooting at the Antioch High School in suburban Tennessee left one dead and another injured on Wednesday. The alleged gunman reportedly then aimed the gun at himself and took his own life. The victim's family has since spoken to News Channel 5 about the tragedy, as they are "devastated and in disbelief."

People Magazine reported that the alleged gunman was a 17-year-old male student who walked in with a handgun. He opened fire at 11:09 a.m. in the school cafeteria, injuring two students. One of them was a 16-year-old, and the injuries later proved fatal when she died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Metro Nashville Police Department spokesperson Don Aaron said.

Patsy Montesinos sat down with News Channel 5 to share that she had spoken to the aunt and father of the victim, noting that they were still at the hospital at the time. The victim has since been identified as Josselin Corea Escalante.

"He says Jocelyn always brought home good grades and played soccer. She was kind and loving. He tells me Jocelyn was an older sister but still daddy's little girl. In Spanish, [the father] is telling me every day I told her how much I loved her. He said that when he sent her to school today he never imagined she wouldn't come home. Now, the family is asking for more security in the school. They say it's always the same story when any school shooting ever happens: that nothing ever changes."

As for the gunman, People Magazine reports that he has been identified as Solomon Henderson. As for the other student who sustained injuries, the bullet grazed his arms, and he is currently in stable condition at the same hospital. Reportedly, another student from the same school was also present at the hospital, though his injuries did not appear to be from a gunshot.

Metro Nashville Public Schools Director Dr. Adrienne Battle has since issued a statement, as reported by WSMV:

"This is a heartbreaking day for the entire Antioch High School community and all of us in Nashville Public Schools. My heart goes out to the families of our students as they face unimaginable loss. I want to thank the school staff who quickly and heroically followed emergency protocols, potentially preventing further harm, as well as the Metro Nashville Police Department and Nashville Fire Department for their swift and urgent response."

She noted that while the "rest of our schools will remain open," the Antioch High School has been closed down for the rest of the week.

"Counseling teams will be on hand to provide support for students who need help in processing this tragedy," the statement reads.

MNPD Chief John Drake has revealed that at the time of writing, the motive remains unknown, and whether the Antioch High School shooting was targeted. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
