Police stated that CCTV footage revealed Hawkins, wearing a hooded jacket, pushed a stranger without any warnings as the subway train approached around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Hawkins was immediately arrested and charged with attempted murder and second-degree assault. This was not the first time when Hawkins was booked. Previously, in 2019, he was charged with assault for attacking an NYPD officer, leaving him with a back injury. The police officer was reportedly in full uniform when Hawkins attacked him.

As per the reports, Hawkins was also arrested in another case but was released without bail in 2020. He was also charged with assault, harassment, and possession of an illegal weapon in an incident that took place in October 2024 and has an open case in Brooklyn.

"That poor man was just minding his own business!! Be careful out there, people," someone else said.
"A head injury can change a life forever. TBI’s (if that’s the state of things for the victim) can be beyond life altering," a user wrote.
"Even if you were having a bad day, why would you push an innocent man into what could be his death?" someone questioned.
"That's horrifying. Glad the victim is expected to survive—hoping for justice," another user wrote.

After the incident, NYPD evacuated the subway platform and closed the scene for further investigation. This recent incident added more pressure on the authorities to incorporate safety measures in the subway.

Governor places guardsmen at subway stations in view of recent crimes

In the previous months, the New York City subway has encountered various crimes. Two people were injured at Woodside Avenue and 61st Street in Queens after a man slashed them with a knife. In another incident, a homeless woman was set on fire by a stranger while she was sleeping on a subway train. Unfortunately, the woman could not survive, but the NYPD was successful in arresting the suspect.

These gruesome incidents led Governor Kathy Hochul to place more than 1,000 guardsmen at various subway stations across the state from the beginning of the holiday season to avoid the increasing incidents of violence in subway stations. Moreover, the Guardian Angels, a volunteer patrol group, began to deploy teams across the transit system to take care of the safety and well-being of the passengers.
