Tributes pour in as Ryan Quinney, a 20-year-old Mississippi Valley State University football player, died in a car accident on Friday night. He was reportedly found dead after his car went through a chase and ultimately crashed on Talbert Drive, Mississippi.
A Facebook post shared by Anthony Cox, identified as Quinney’s stepfather, confirmed the crash occurred in Yazoo City, Mississippi.
"Gm, on behalf of my family, I'm deeply saddened to make the public announcement that our son Ryan Quinney passed away last night in Yazoo City," the post read. "This is a pain I never wish any parent should experience. While I have to give all my support and attention to my love Lavetter Jones Cox and my family, I do ask that you keep us in your prayers," he added.

According to Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers, the chase started in Flora and continued into Yazoo City. When Quinney’s car was attempting to escape, the driver lost control, and the car veered off the road, crossed a ditch, hit a parked vehicle, and went airborne. The car then struck a light pole and flipped multiple times.
According to the officials, Quinney was pronounced dead at the scene, and the injured driver was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Quinney was a resident of Mobile, Alabama. He was in his second season at MVSU and had 13 tackles in five games. His most recent appearance was against Alabama State on October 12. Quinney’s stepfather, Anthony Cox, reportedly received a phone call around 11:30 on Friday night informing him that Quinney had died in a car accident.
"I was always told to be careful with who you hang with, be wise who you run with; choices are everything and do come with consequences. This is a result of an action that brought a consequence, and the consequence is we don’t have Ryan anymore," Cox told WKRG News 5.
After learning about Quinney's sudden departure, his former head football coach at Theodore High School took to Facebook, sharing,
"Ryan’s impact on and off the field will never be forgotten. His dedication, leadership, and love for the game inspired all who knew him."
MVSU sent its condolences to Quinney's family and friends.
"We are heartbroken to share that our beloved student, Ryan Quinney, tragically lost his life in a car accident last night. Ryan was a bright light in our community with a spirit that lifted everyone around him. He will be deeply missed by his friends, faculty, and all who knew him," it read.
Quinney's death occurred the day before MSVU’s match against Jackson State University at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, where both teams paid tribute to Quinney. MVSU further took a delay-of-game penalty on its first drive of the game in the memory of Quinney. Jackson State declined the penalty and won the game 51-14.
