What happened to Pete Medhurst? GoFundMe raises over $61,000 as wife mourns Navy Football’s beloved broadcaster’s passing

Pete Medhurst, the voice of the Midshipmen on the Navy Radio Network, has died after a brief battle with an aggressive form of Melanoma. The 55-year-old was diagnosed with brain cancer in October 2024. At the time, Bill Wagner of The Capital shared on X that Medhurst would undergo surgery to remove a brain tumor. He wrote:

“Pete Medhurst, the voice of @NavyAthletics, has been diagnosed with brain cancer. Medhurst, a lifelong Shady Side resident, will undergo surgery Friday morning to remove a brain tumor.”

In November 2024, the Navy athletic program shared that Medhurt was recovering after a successful brain surgery. The post read:

“Good news from the Medhurst family. Pete is doing well and we are getting out of the ICU a day earlier than they thought he would and moving upstairs to a regular room. Today ends Pete’s 240-game streak, but we know Joe [Miller] and Keith [Mills] will crush it. Thank you everyone. Go Navy!”

Medhurst passed away following a brief battle with cancer. Medhurst’s death was confirmed by his wife, Brenda Medhurst, on January 20, 2025. In a Facebook post, she wrote:

“Last night, we had to say Goodbye to Pete Medhurst. Pete fought a very hard battle against an aggressive melanoma cancer. He spent his final hours surrounded by the kids and I, and he felt so much love. We are heartbroken and devastated.”

In the Facebook post, Brenda Medhurst revealed a GoFundMe was set up if people wished to donate to render financial assistance to the family at this difficult time. The community members rallied around the family, helping them to raise $61,000 at the time of writing this article. The fundraiser, with a target of $80,000, has witnessed donations from 180 donors.

Brenda Medhurst frequently posted about her husband’s health since he was diagnosed with brain cancer in October 2024. On December 4, 2024, Brenda revealed her husband, Pete Medhurst, was moved to rehab to begin physical therapy after spending 36 days in a hospital. She added:

“ On Monday he did receive his first round of immunotherapy and will receive his next round on Christmas Eve. Thank you so much to everyone for their thoughts and prayers and generosity. It means so much to us and we love you all. At this time, Pete is unable to have visitors but he is fighting very hard and we hope to see everyone soon.”

On January 5, 2024, Brenda celebrated her husband’s birthday and penned a message on Facebook. She wrote:

“I would like to wish Pete Medhurst a very Happy Birthday today. The kids and I are heading to the rehab shortly and we will decorate his room with balloons and celebrate him. We will read him all of your messages and I know that will make him very happy. Thank you again to everyone for your thoughts and prayers.”

On social media, athletes, friends, and fans paid tribute to the beloved broadcaster whose career spanned decades.

Pete Medhurst is survived by his wife, Brenda, and his three children.
