The residents of New Smyrna Beach recently woke up to the tragic news of a deadly collision. Two vehicles ended up in a head-on crash. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash led to the death of one while two others faced serious injuries.
Florida Highway Patrol released a statement in which they mentioned how the crash happened. They revealed that the crash took place on Josephine Street and Elizabeth Street on Sunday at 10:11 am. The reason behind it was that a 67-year-old failed to "negotiate" a curve.
The driver was driving a 2008 Hyundai Elantra west along the street. As the vehicle accidentally entered into the eastbound lane, it came in the path of an SUV, a 2016 Chevy Tahoe. The two cars then hit each other in the front.
The collision resulted in a fatality as the Hyundai driver from New Smyrna Beach was rushed to Advent Health New Smyrna and was soon pronounced dead. On the other hand, a 77-year-old man and a 79-year-old woman passenger were taken to Halifax Hospital after suffering serious injuries. However, according to Click Orlando, their injuries were non-life-threatening.
A picture of the deadly collision is currently making rounds on the internet. In the photo, the two vehicles that had collided could be clearly seen. While the SUV's airbag opened, the 2008 Hyundai Elantra seemingly did not have an inflated airbag after the crash.
Netizens have been hoping for a fast recovery for the two New Smyrna Beach residents and peace for the one who died in the crash. A Facebook user wrote,
"Sad story, .....To drive in Edgewater/New Smyrna lately is a madhouse anymore. That curve is very narrow and people regularly push the limits. If you drop a wheel then try to correct. It is very likely to veer into the oncoming lane."
Another one penned,
"Very sad.. It happened right in front of me."
Many wrote "prayers" on the social media platform for the victims of the crash.
Which road of New Smyrna Beach was blocked after the crash?
The news release by the Florida Highway Patrol revealed that a roadblock was caused for both lanes on the street where the accident took place. Josephine Street, from James Street to Old Mission Road was blocked for a few hours.
However, as of 2:30 pm, the roadblock was cleared.
The accident is currently under investigation. Meanwhile, all residents of the city are advised to drive safely.
