On December 23, 2024, Officer Michael Horan of Greensboro Police Department was shot and killed while he was responding to a report of a man with Firearms in a Food Lion store, Lawndale Drive in Greensboro, North Carolina. The investigation into the circumstances of the shooting is underway.
The Duplin County Sheriff's Office informed the public via Facebook that the police had caught the suspect around 1 pm, after a high-speed chase:
"The suspect fled the scene and was taken into custody by law enforcement after a high speed chase that ended near the Duplin County - Sampson County line. Please keep the Horan family, Greensboro Police Department and the community/friends impacted by this tragedy in your prayers."
According to reports, Officer Michael Horan, who joined the Greensboro Police Department in 2017 was with the Department for seven years until his death. The Greensboro police have set up a fundraiser for him on the HelpaHero website, which has collected about $55,000.
According to the Help A Hero fundraiser page, in 2019, Officer Horan won a lifesaving award for risking his own life by jumping into an active rip current to save the lives of a man and a boy from drowning.

The case details are not completely out since the case is still under investigation. According to ABC7, Officer Michael Horan was responding to a report of a man carrying a firearm inside the Food Lion Store, a supermarket chain in America, when he was shot around 11 a.m. on December 23, 2024.
The investigation into the officer's death and the circumstances that led to the shooting are underway. According to ABC 6, citing the State Bureau of Investigation, Officer Horan and the armed man got into a brief struggle inside the store and the suspect shot the officer and fled the scene in a car.
Ramona Miller, who was present at the store at the time of the shooting, recalled the events with FOX8 WGHP, though she didn't see the shooting, she recalls hearing five shots and an employee yelling "shooting".
"We were on our way out and I was purchasing a lottery ticket and I was just sitting there and heard a ‘pop-pop’ and then ‘pop-pop-pop’, I think I heard five shots. At first I didn’t know it was a shooting….. but an employee yelled out ‘shooting! shooting!,'" Miller stated.
The suspect, who tried to flee after the crime, was spotted near Johnston County and officers from Johnston County Sheriff’s Office pursued him. But, once the suspect crossed into Sutton County, the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office also entered the chase. Later, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol took over the chase, Fox 8 reported.
This joint effort by multiple departments helped catch the suspect, who is now in custody. Neither the charges filed against the suspect nor the suspect's identity has been released to the public yet.
