Dan Rather's wife, Jean Rather, recently passed away at 89. Friends of the CBS News anchor announced her passing in a statement via Facebook and confirmed that she was with her family during her last minutes. She was at her home in Austin, Texas.

The statement read,

"Today is the saddest of days for Dan and the extended Rather family. Jean Rather, Dan’s wife, passed away at their home in Austin, Texas, early this morning. She had been on hospice care for some time, but the news still comes as a shock for those of us who knew and loved her."

It continued -

"Please keep the Rathers in your thoughts. Jean lived a full life as an incredible wife, mother, friend, and artist — and a true Texan."

The statement further confirmed that Dan Rather's wife, Jean, died due to cancer. However, it did not confirm which cancer she was suffering from.

Who was Dan Rather's wife Jean Rather?

Jean was born in Smithville, Texas, and went to a public school there. Following her schooling, she went straight to work and met Dan Rather at a Houston radio station. The couple tied the knot in 1957 and were together till Jean's death.

Throughout their marriage, the Rathers lived in various locations in the world, including Dallas, Washington, DC, London, and New York. However, three years back, they moved to Texas. In her obituary, her family mentioned how traveling the world gave her a different understanding and perspective of life.

Besides being a loving mother and grandmother, she was also an accomplished artist. She attended classes at Mary Mount Manhattan College and American University. Her style was unique as she carefully studied paintings and sculptures of well-known artists in a number of countries, including France, England, Russia, Italy, Israel, and more.

Her paintings and collages were also put up on display in various private collections and galleries across the nation. She also served as the Painter Member and Vice Chair of the Art Commission of the City of New York for eight years.

Netizens are mourning the passing of Jean Rather and sending their heartfelt condolences to Dan Rather and their family and friends.

A netizen penned,

"So incredibly sad to read this news. Jean sounded like a remarkable woman and citizen. Sending much love and healing energy to Dan and his family."

Several others called her passing a "great loss."
