Greta Marie Otteson and Arno Els recently died in Vietnam possibly due to tainted limoncello. According to Vietnam News, the incident occurred on December 26, 2024, a day after Christmas. The bodies of Otteson, 33, and Els, 36, were found in separate rooms in Hoi An Silverbell villa in Hoi An, Vietnam. The news portal reported that the villa's staff discovered the body.
On January 25, The Times reported that the couple leased a nine-bedroom guesthouse and hosted some guests at the property. They registered for long-term temporary residence at the villa on July 4, 2024, per The Guardian.
Vietnamese police confirmed to the portal that Els and Otteson got engaged three weeks before they died. Moreover, they moved to the country in February 2024.
The police revealed that they died from methanol poisoning as they consumed tainted limoncello. The drink was bought from a local restaurant on the occasion of Christmas Eve.
Reports had further confirmed that several empty alcohol bottles were discovered at the scene. Vietnam News mentioned that "initial findings showed no signs of scratches or external force on the bodies."
Otteson's family releases statement after finding out limoncello was the cause of death
Greta Marie Otteson's parents, Susan and Paul, recently said in a statement to the Times that the autopsy result verified the cause of their death. They further revealed how the late couple travelled across the world and called them "experienced worldwide travellers."
They further revealed that the two were elated to have found a home in Vietnam as they were planning their future there.
"The Vietnamese police have now confirmed that the cause of death was methanol poisoning, as verified by the autopsy results."
"Both Greta and Arno were experienced worldwide travelers. They found their perfect home and were incredibly happy with their life in Vietnam, planning for the future."
"They were a loving couple with their life ahead of them. The tributes we have had from around the world are unbelievable. Our aim is to bring the people who supplied the alcohol and killed Greta and Arno to justice," Otteson's parents added.
