On Friday, December 13, Mathews Funeral Home published an obituary announcing the demise of Gleaton Jones, a former walk-on running back for the University of Georgia's football team, Georgia Bulldogs, at age 21. Gleaton Jones was hospitalized three days before his death due to a brain injury from a car accident.
On December 10, 2024, Gleaton Jones got into a car accident while on a hunting trip in St. George Island, Florida. According to reports, Gleaton was severely injured due to the accident and passed away on Friday despite the effort of the Hospital staff.
According to the official student newspaper of UGA, his community and friends attended a prayer for Jones held in Porterfield Methodist Church on December 11. Prayers also poured in via social media from many people for his health recovery, but unfortunately, Jones passed away.
Many offered their condolences on the young athlete's passing, including the college community and people who knew him.
Who is Gleaton Jones?
Gleaton Jones is described by people who know him as an exceptional athlete and human being. Though a former member of his university's football club, Jones was also involved in other sports like Basketball and athletics.
According to his obituary, he was a four-year Honor Graduate of Deerfield-Windsor School. As an All-Region football player, he was even selected to the GISA All-Star team, and as a track athlete, he became a member of the State Champion track team in 2019. Later, when he graduated high school and joined the university, he was a preferred walk-on for the university's Football team in 2021.
He was studying at The University of Georgia Terry School of Business and would have graduated next year with a Bachelor's in marketing. At his University, he was a part of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
Other than his Athletics skills, the obituary also talks about his activities in his church. Gleaton played guitar and was "instrumental" in creating a band at the youth group at Porterfield Methodist Church.
Known by his closest friends as “Gleat,” he was described as simply joyful and magnetic. There was no room big enough that his bright light was unable to fill(...)His light-heartedness and joyful disposition could lift others to happiness, and his listening skills often gave peace of mind and encouragement.
According to the obituary, a "celebration of life" ceremony will be held at 2.00 pm ET on December 16, 2024, in Wynfield Plantation.
