On November 6, 2024, law enforcement responded to a report of a body found at the University of California San Diego’s (UCSD) Geisel library. The building was promptly evacuated and closed as police conducted their investigation.

Authorities stated that an individual died after falling from the library’s 8th floor, with officers confirming the person was deceased upon arrival.

Responding officers were called at around 11:30 AM and they attempted life-saving measures, but the unidentified individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

At 12:50 PM, UCPD officers and library staff closed the library early and directed patrons to leave. Four UCPD vehicles were seen parked near the silent tree, with two leaving at 12:55 PM after the building was cleared. The incident has caused social media outrage. An X user wrote,

“My brother goes to UCSD and said someone just jumped 8 stories at their library. The youth is feeling desperate and helpless and idiots elected this moron because they think he will drop gas prices. They put money over morals and he will do NOTHING to help them.”

The library's Communications and Engagement Office later stated that they did not believe the individual was a student of the University. Librarians offered students the contact information for Geisel's Library Safety and Security office, so they could arrange to retrieve any belongings left behind.

According to The Triton, a timely warning was issued at 1:44 PM, assuring the campus community that the incident posed no threat and that further updates would be provided. In response to the incident, UCSD's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) office offered walk-in appointments that day.

Classes at UCSD were relocated owing to the incident

The Communications and Engagement Office informed the media outlet that at approximately 11:35 AM, they received a report of an incident at Geisel Library that resulted in the death of an individual who was not enrolled as a student. They expressed sorrow over the loss and emphasized the importance of supporting each other.

At 3:14 PM, the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, Elizabeth H. Simmons, sent an email to all academics, staff, and students at UCSD, announcing that Geisel Library would remain closed for the remainder of the day as a precaution. The email advised those with scheduled classes to check Canvas for further information on class relocations.

Meanwhile, netizens posted their concerns and grief over the incident.

“I graduated from UCSD a few years ago, while there someone fell accidentally from I think the 5th floor on Tioga Hall. People including myself were traumatized, I can’t imagine how everyone is feeling right now. You and all the students are in my thoughts and prayers,” a social media user posted.
“a student fell from the 8th floor of the ucsd geisel library this morning …. i hope everyone is taking care of their mental health and staying safe,” another person wrote.

In 2021, a similar incident happened at UCSD when university officials reported that a student fell from a dorm room window. The medical examiner stated that the student, identified as Aaron Fan, had been attending a party on the 8th floor of Tioga Hall when campus police arrived to address a noise complaint.

Witnesses claimed that Fan went into the bathroom, and shortly after, he fell out of the window, landing on the ground just outside the main entrance of the dorm.
