Gavin Barooah, a 19-year-old former Roxbury ice hockey player, was identified as the driver of a Mercedes-Benz killed in the Morris County, New Jersey, crash. The tragic incident occurred on Thanksgiving day on Thursday, November 28, 2024.
Meghan Knab, spokesperson for the Morris County Prosecutor's Office, cited in multiple reports that on Thursday night, Randolph police, Morris County prosecutor's and sheriff's offices responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Morris and Sussex turnpikes, where they found the driver of the Mercedes-Benz later identified as Barooah pronounced dead at the scene after colliding with a Jeep.
The driver of the Jeep was reportedly taken to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Roxbury community mourns death of Gavin Barooah
The Roxbury community is grappling with a profound loss of beloved member Gavin Barooah. In the wake of the tragedy, a volley of heartfelt tributes came flooding in on social media, extending condolences to the victim's family and friends during this difficult time. Gavin Borroah was described as an innately kind and bright young man by community members, who were acquainted with his family.
Alpha Fitness in New Jersey penned a lengthy tribute to Gavin Barooah. In a Facebook post, the gym revealed that Barooah trained at the facility as a hockey player. They added:
“Everyone at Alpha cares for him so much. It’s beyond work or business, we have all truly become family. We will miss his energy, smile, helpfulness, and enthusiasm. Such a good kid. Gone too soon…Forever a part of our lives and our Alpha family. Rest in peace, Gavin.”
The statement was echoed by community member Sandy Dworshak, who described the teen as a beloved and kind individual. She wrote:
“Such a tremendous loss we love you and will forever miss you Gavin Barooah was in a car accident last night and passed away on impact. He was the most beautiful person; he was so kind and loved by everyone. Please pray for his family Shanda Barooah.”
In response to the post, Sue Hansen said:
“He was a very special young man. We will miss him deeply. Prayers are sent to my niece Shanda and her family.”
In a similar incident, Endicott College Police Sgt. Jeremy Cole was also killed in a crash on Thanksgiving day when “driving home early” after a shift on campus. The 49-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, identified as a 40-year-old Massachusetts man, was taken to an area hospital.
