What happened to Carter Halverson? Community mourns as teen dies in Paulina, Iowa crash

18-year-old Carter Halverson of Paullina, Iowa, tragically lost his life in a single-vehicle accident in O'Brien County near Paullina on December 21, 2024, at approximately 12:11am.

According to O'Brien County Sheriff's Communications Center, they received a 911 call from OnStar, reporting a possible collision near 5454 500th Street Southwest in Paullina. OnStar is a provider of in-vehicle safety and security services, that can automatically detect certain types of collisions and alert emergency services.

As reported by Yahoo News, when the officials arrived on the scene, they discovered a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu. According to OnStar officials, the airbags of the car had been deployed and there was also an indication that the car could have rolled over.

Investigation revealed that the vehicle which was spotted on 500th Street, left the roadway to the left, entered the north ditch, struck a driveway, and rolled at least once. The driver, identified as 18-year-old Carter Halverson of Paullina, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Carter Halverson was a senior at South O'Brien School District, Paullina. A statement from Superintendent Riley and JH/HS Principal Phillips, posted on Facebook said:

"With heavy hearts, we share that Carter Halverson, a senior, lost his life in a car accident last night."
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and loved ones as they cope with this tremendous loss. 🩶🖤Additional information will be shared when available. "

In a separate letter to the parents, Wade Riley, Superintendent, and Denise Phillips, JH/HS Principal said:

"We will offer support services for all of our students and staff during this time as our community grieves the loss of Carter and process the tragic news. Our counselors, Sofia Seliger and Renae Negus, will be present today in Paullina for those who want to come in from 2-4pm. We will also have the ministerial association available this evening from 4-6pm to offer support. Additional grief and counseling support will be provided from 10am-2pm on Monday, December 23, 2024 and when students return from winter break."

A person named Michelle Sohn posted a tribute for Carter Halverson on their Facebook account. The post which features a photo montage of Carter, said:

"I haven't still been able to wrap my head around the horrible news we all received this morning. My prayers go out to the Halverson family. Carter was a great kid with such a huge smile."
"I will miss seeing him in the front row of the games cheering loud for his classmates. He really had a smile that would light up a room. He will be so dearly missed by many. I pray for god to comfort everyone in the days to come. Keep South O'Brien school district in your thought, as we lost a good one way too early."

According to 4 KTIV News, the details regarding the accident are still under investigation.
