Reportedly, the man died hours after the incident, which stemmed from a collision between his pickup and another car. Reportedly, the call about the crash came in just after 7:00 pm. While rescue crews were able to pull the man out of the water and rush him to the hospital, he succumbed to his critical injuries later in the night at the hospital.

An official statement from the D.C. Fire and EMS Department on X about the incident on Arlington Memorial Bridge reads as follows:

"Vehicle into Potomac River beneath the Arlington Memorial bridge. Vehicle submerged. In process of transporting divers out to scene. Vehicle came off the bridge after collision with another vehicle. #DCsBravest."

When the two cars collided, the pickup plowed through the concrete railing that lines the bridge, plunging straight into the ice-covered river, a spokesperson from the D.C. Fire and EMS Department revealed. Divers were deployed at the scene, where they searched for the man and his vehicle.

Footage of the crash has been going viral online, and in it, a white pickup truck can be seen swerving across the lanes before heading straight for the concrete railing and toppling over.

Per DC News Now, the search and rescue crew took 22 minutes to find and pull the man to safety. As for the other car, it remained on the bridge, though one of the passengers was rushed to the hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, The National Desk reports. Two others sustained minor injuries.

The National Desk reports that the U.S. Park Police and D.C. Fire officials plan to return to the Potomac River on Friday for investigations, as it remains unclear if the pickup had other occupants. However, DC News reports that officials have reason to believe that there may have been more than one person inside the truck.

The DC Fire officials have since confirmed that they are attempting to pull the vehicle out of the water, as it still remains submerged. As for the Arlington Memorial Bridge, while it was initially closed down, the bridge reopened at 2 am on Friday, alongside the Lincoln Memorial Circle, NW. All the while, it was closed down, and officials asked the public to opt for alternative routes instead.
