Alex Kemp, a 19-year-old New Jersey track and XC star died after a skiing accident at Jiminy Peak Resort on Monday, January 6, 2024. Kemp, a freshman at NCAA Division III, Williams College, was reportedly skiing at Jiminy Peak Resort in Massachusetts when he veered over an embankment and crashed, sustaining a head injury.
Kemp, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, January 7, 2024, a day after the accident. In a statement, the Berkshire District Attorney's Office said they have no evidence to believe drugs or alcohol is a contributing factor in the tragic incident. He said:
"There is no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident."
Community mourns death of New Jersey track and cross country star Alex Kemp
Alex Kemp, who graduated high school from Christian Brothers Academy in New Jersey, was a track and cross country star who finished ninth at the NJSIAA Cross Country Meet of Champions during his senior year.
Kemp, who was also a member of the cross-country team in his freshman year at Williams College college, reportedly finished 63rd at the NCAA DIII Championships. His death was mourned by Williams College President Maud Mandel, who described Kemp as a gifted athlete who will be remembered for his character above all, a sentiment echoed by several community members.
Mandel, who further characterized Kemp as an innately kind individual, revealed the late athlete took immense joy in seeing his teammates succeed. Part of the statement read:
"He loved being at Williams, being part of our team, and he always knew how to bring others along with him. Alex was fearless and incredibly motivated as a runner, both in training and competition. But even when he didn’t have his own best day, he took sincere joy and pride in seeing teammates do well. The team was always his biggest priority.”
Flotrack's sports news Facebook page also paid tribute to Alex Kemp. They wrote:
“He graduated high school from CBA (NJ) and was already a star at the DIII level. He was the highest-finishing freshman at the NCAA XC Championship, placing 63rd. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family and the teams at both CBA and Williams.”
D3Glorydays podcast also penned a touching tribute mourning the death of the beloved track runner, stating he will be missed in the community. In a Facebook post, they wrote:
“The D3 community mourns the tragic loss of Williams freshman, Alex Kemp. Kemp was the top freshman finisher at XC nationals in November after finishing 63rd. The division will not be the same without him. Our hearts are with the Kemp family and the Williams community.”
As the community continues to mourn the loss, Alex Kemp's family has yet to address the incident.
