Ayahuasca is a psychedelic brew made from plants and has been used for centuries in traditional shamanic rituals by indigenous people in the Amazon. The drug has recently caught the focus of the mainstream media after the death of Stephen tWitch Boss.

Allison Holker, wife and now widow of Stephen Boss, recently shared that her husband had participated in an Ayahuasca ritual and never fully recovered from the experience.

As per Healthline, Ayahuasca is a psychoactive brew consisting of leaves from Psychotria viridis and stalks from Banisteriopsis caapi. When these plants are combined, it enables the active compound, N, N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), to be delivered to the body and create a potent psychedelic experience.

Traditionally used in spiritual and healing ceremonies among various indigenous tribes, it is said to induce introspective experiences and emotional release and has even been said to produce visions.

Some studies indicate that the drug might be useful in treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction. In doing so, the plant may also give users a distinct perspective of their lives or help them work through past trauma by inducing an altered state of consciousness.

Studies have suggested that the drug might be beneficial for people with substance abuse disorders. Users may undergo significant behavioral and psychological changes during the process.

People Magazine also reports heightened mindfulness, increased cognitive flexibility, and a rise in creativity after their psychedelic experience.

More about Stephen tWitch Boss' experience with ayahuasca and its effect

Ayahuasca dosage, mental state, and setting play a crucial role in its effects. Users frequently report hyper-visuality, symbolic imagery, and visits from spiritual beings during the experience. Emotions may be amplified, which means it could cause euphoric highs, great sorrow, and fears.

Most report some degree of changed perception of the world, time, and reality, experiencing distortions that run counter to their normal way of being. According to Healthline, Common physical reactions like vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heart rate, and sweating are seen as a part of the cleansing process.

Allison Holker revealed that her husband, Stephen Boss, underwent a psychedelic journey just before his death in December 2022. Holker said in an interview on The Jamie Kern Lima Show that Boss was not the same person after the incident. She said:

"I think it was a very big turning point for him. I feel like his heart was never really in the same place when he came back."

She also suggested it had unlocked feelings within him that he was unable to process. Ayahuasca’s involvement in his struggles, however, remains unclear.
